Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times! – John 13:38 (NIV)
By now you have probably heard about the mass shooting in Oregon where nine people were killed and several others were wounded. This is not a column about gun control or Obama’s remarks about the shooting and it’s not about gun-free zones.
Several media outlets including the Washington Post reported that witnesses said the shooter told people to stand up and asked them if they were a Christian or not. Anyone who responded “yes” was shot in the head. If they said “other” or didn’t answer, they were shot elsewhere in the body, usually the leg.
That made me think about what I would do if I ever faced a similar situation. I am proud to be a Christian, but if someone was pointing a gun at my head, would I acknowledge that I am a Christian knowing I would soon die?
What would you do?
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? – Psalm 56:3-4 (NIV)
