Summer will end soon enough, and childhood as well. – George R.R. Martin
We’re coming up on the last week of July. Saturday is the first of August and when we turn the page on the calendar to August, we’ll see “school starts” or “back to school” or “vacation ends” staring right at us at the end of the month.
When I was in my teens, summer was a great time for me. Besides hitting the lake or the river to cool off, there were parties, and concerts to attend. I usually had a summer job, too. I spent one summer on a crew bucking bales of hay. One summer I visited nine different counties and mapped every structure in towns with populations less than 1000. One other summer I painted crosswalks and curbs.
A couple weeks before school started, it was time for the two-a-day football practices that took up most of my time, which meant that my summer had officially ended.
So today’s message is kind of a warning – with the calendar turning to August this Saturday, the countdown officially begins to the end of summer (although autumn does not officially begin until September 23).
It also means it’s time to rack up some memories.
Young people, it’s wonderful to be young! Enjoy every minute of it. Do everything you want to do; take it all in. But remember that you must give an account to God for everything you do. – Ecclesiastes 11:9 (NLT)
Have a great week!
