“God helps those who help themselves.”
Do you remember that verse from the Bible?
I follow Relevant magazine on Twitter and try to read some of their articles from time to time. Recently I read an article titled, “Five Verses That Don’t Mean What You Think” that was posted on their website.
One of the verses listed was “God helps those who help themselves” which I have heard many times and probably used a few times. I’ve heard some people use it to condemn people who are having a tough go of it especially those who are getting public assistance.
The interesting thing is “God helps those who help themselves” is not a verse in the Bible.
As Christians we should try to help those less fortunate than us – even if they can’t help themselves. Who knows when the tables might be turned and we’ll need help?
I was hungry, and you gave me food. I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink. I was alone and away from home, and you invited me into your house. I was without clothes, and you gave me something to wear. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’ – Matthew 25:35-36 (NCV)
Have a great week!
