Cold War: Tan, Rested, & Ready!

The Cold War isn’t thawing; it is burning with a deadly heat. Communism isn’t sleeping; it is, as always, plotting, scheming, working, fighting. – Richard M. Nixon

The last few weeks have been interesting with talk of a new Cold War between the United States and Russia. Recently one of Australia’s major news sites reported, “The Cold War is back” and for those of us who served during the last Cold War let me just say that we are tan, rested, and ready for this fight!

Many readers may not remember the Cold War. Here is a pretty good description of it courtesy of the History Learning Site:

The Cold War is the name given to the relationship that developed primarily between the USA and the USSR after World War Two. The Cold War was to dominate international affairs for decades and many major crises occurred – the Cuban Missile Crisis, Vietnam, Hungary and the Berlin Wall being just some. For many, the growth in weapons of mass destruction was the most worrying issue.

Life seemed a little simpler during the Cold War. We were more worried about getting nuked than about terrorists or about anything else. We just spent more money on nukes than the other guy, and that made us feel safer!

For those who want to learn more about the Cold War, I suggest watching “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.” Here’s a clip:

I was on the “front lines” during the last Cold War.  At least my training made me think that I was on the front lines, and that the commies were coming over the hill any minute.

My “front line” included Whiteman AFB, Missouri, where I issued code material to the folks who could launch a nuclear missile, Andersen AFB, Guam, where I guarded nukes that were loaded on B-52s, and Malmstrom AFB, Montana, where I provided security for nuclear missiles.

By the way, and this is something of which I am most proud, I never lost or misplaced a nuclear weapon.

For all that hard work, I received this wonderful certificate:

Cold War CertificateI may be a little slower, but if they promise to hand out more great certificates like the one above, you can count me in when the next Cold War starts!

  1. How many common Russian people have you met, Mike? Most I’ve met are pretty good people and could care less about the idiots running both of our nations into the ground. The fights not with them, it’s with our political controllers.

    • Greg – I’ve met many Russians in my life. Re-read my column – it’s more of a joke about the cold war than anything. -JmB
