Thursday Numbers

Welcome to “Thursday Numbers” – the last one for March!

If you are a first-time visitor, “Thursday Numbers” is the column where I take a look at the numbers that are in the news (in descending order) and provide commentary (sometimes spiked with a little sarcasm).

This week I write about the Baucus home, Hot Lotto, unemployment, Sunburst, Matt Rosendale, Ryan Zinke, Corey Stapleton, a Billings physician, Viagra & Cialis, veterans, John Lewis, Elsie Arntzen, Pope Francis, primary election day, contraceptives, Obamacare, Sweet 16, McDonald’s Prime burger, senior citizens, Rockin’ the Rivers, and Joe Biden’s e-mail. There’s a lot more so read on!

4,900,000

That’s the jackpot of the Hot Lotto lottery game which is played in about 15 states, including Montana. The odds of winning the jackpot are one in 29,144,841. The prize starts at one million and goes up from there, so it does not look like anyone has won for several months – like since October 2013.

I guess that is why we’re seeing more ads for this game on television, and that they will pay all the taxes if you win the jackpot. They could probably get more players if the odds were better…

1,200,000

Former Senator and now Ambassador to China Max Baucus has his Washington, D.C., home up for sale, and it can be yours for about $1.2 million. There’s a slideshow of the house. The “powder room” looks a little tight. You can see it HERE.

I also think the neighbors are too close, so I am passing on this house. I need my space…

311,000

That’s how many new claims for unemployment were filed last week, which was a decrease from the week before. (Source)

It’s just hard to get claims below 300,000…

140,000

Congratulations to Sunburst (MT) students for winning a $140,000 in technology for the school in a national Samsung “Solve For Tomorrow” challenge. (Source)

17,847

The Matt Rosendale for Congress (Matt for Montana) Facebook page has 17,847 “Likes.”

16,000

The Ryan Zinke for Congress (Ryan Zinke for Congress) Facebook page has 16,000 “Likes.”

10,777

The Corey Stapleton for Congress (Corey for MT) Facebook page has 10,777 “Likes.”

2,100

That’s how many narcotic pain pills a Billings physician named Ruchi M. Fitzgerald wrote fake prescriptions for before she was caught. According to the Associated Press, she “has been sentenced to five years of probation and ordered to pay a $75,000 fine.”

Probation? That’s being a little soft on crime…

1998

On this date in 1998 the Food and Drug Administration approved the drug Viagra. (Source)

Just think – without the FDA approving this we would not have all those commercials about male impotence that air during inopportune times. Plus, we would not have the Cialis commercials showing a man and a woman sitting in two bathtubs outside.

Full disclosure – I have two bathtubs, but they are inside. One is upstairs and one is downstairs.

1,892

According to a press release from Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), that is “the number of veterans estimated to have died by suicide to date in 2014.”

That is so sad – our country must do more. Thanks to Senator John Walsh for stepping up to help.

1,432

The John Lewis for Congress (Montanans for Lewis) Facebook page has 1,432 “Likes.”

978

The Elsie Arntzen for Congress (Elsie for Montana) Facebook page has 978 “Likes.”

76

Pope Francis is viewed favorably by 76% of Americans.

I am not Catholic, but I like what he has done so far…

69

This is a Public Service Announcement from The Western Word:  There are 69 days left until the June 3, 2014, primary election in Montana.

Tick, tick, tick…

49

According to a new Rasmussen Reports survey, “49% of Likely U.S. Voters believe a business should be allowed to opt out of providing coverage for contraceptives if it violates the religious beliefs of the business owner. Forty percent (40%) disagree and say the business should not be allowed to opt out of the requirement contained in the new national health care law. Ten percent (10%) are undecided.”

17

If you have not signed up for Obamacare yet, have no fear! There’s an extension of the deadline if you use one of the 17 (approved) excuses. See what they are HERE.

16

The NCAA’s “Sweet 16” takes place today and Friday! The “Elite Eight” play Saturday and Sunday.

Three of my four “Final Four” teams are still alive!

12

McDonald’s “Prime” burger costs $12 in Switzerland. There are no plans for it to be offered in the United States.

I am a double quarter pounder with cheese guy – it’s just 750 calories

According to a new Gallup poll, “Over the last seven years, seniors have become less Democratic, and have shown an outright preference for the Republican Party since 2010.”

I guess Democrats scaring seniors with “the Republicans are going to take away your social security” is not working very well these days…

The lineup is set for the three day “Rockin’ the Rivers” rock festival near Three Forks (MT). The event will be held August 8-10. Check out the details HERE or HERE and watch this:

Vice President Joe Biden sent me an e-mail this week with the subject, “I need you” in which he wrote, “This isn’t an exaggeration: if the Republicans take over the Senate, it’ll be because we didn’t close the spending gap when we could. With odds of that takeover at 50-50, Democrats are being outspent by millions in key battlegrounds we can’t afford to lose. Folks, that’s just too dangerous.”

So he asked me to “pitch in” $3 to stop it…
