Every few weeks, former Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer pops up, grabs some attention, and then he disappears. I think he craves the attention and misses the spotlight of being Governor.
More and more Schweitzer reminds me of Cousin Eddie from the National Lampoon Vacation movies, and it’s fun to watch him manipulate the press.
Recently Schweitzer made the rounds again doing interviews, and Lee Newspapers did a story about him from the angle that he might run for President in 2016. They even asked a science professor (a political science professor) about him for their story.
Lee Newspapers reported, “Schweitzer didn’t sound like someone gearing up to run for president in 2016, but, then again, he didn’t rule it out.”
Of course he didn’t rule it out. Reporters would be less inclined to speak to him if ruled it out. Schweitzer has developed toying with the press and getting publicity down to a science.
But just think, wouldn’t it be fun to see Schweitzer, as President, brand a few bills with the word VETO on them outside the White House in the Rose Garden? Press conferences would be more interesting because the national press corps would actually ask Schweitzer some tough questions. What about a state of the union address from Brian Schweitzer? Whoa doggies…
Earth to readers – the previous paragraph isn’t going to happen. Schweitzer won’t be President of the United States.
Apparently Schweitzer’s plan is to show up once in a while, do a few interviews, get some attention, mention Georgetown Lake, and fade away to let the press write stories about him being President. He’ll go to Iowa, New Hampshire, and other caucus and primary states and give speeches…and lots of interviews.
One interesting piece of information came from the story; Schweitzer will occasionally be co-hosting CNN’s Crossfire. He was on the show yesterday (Monday) and did a pretty good job.
Someone told me awhile back that one of the most dangerous places to be in the world is between Schweitzer and a television camera.
Note to the employees of CNN – Watch out!
