May God bless and keep you always
May your wishes all come true
May you always do for others
And let others do for you
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung
May you stay forever young
-‘Forever Young’ by Bob Dylan
Proverbs 4:1 (NIV)
Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction; pay attention and gain understanding.
When we were young, we relied on our parent(s) to provide us with knowledge, instruction, and correction. As we ventured into our teen years, we felt that we had all the answers. When we were teenagers, we didn’t think our parents knew very much. They were not cool or hip. Then as we grew into our 20s, we started to realize that ol’ mom and dad knew a few things and we started to rely on them for their wisdom.
Fortunately, I have been the teenager who did not think my parents were cool, and I have been the parent that was not cool.
I think it’s a lot tougher to go through the teen years today, than it was when I was a teen. I try to remember the quote “Be a parent, not a best friend.” Adam Sandler probably said it best when he said, “Now that I’m a parent, I understand why my father was in a bad mood a lot.”
Proverbs 22:6 tells us, Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Have a great week!
