Thursday Numbers

Welcome to “Thursday Numbers!” If you are a new visitor, this is my weekly column where I take a look at the numbers that are in the news (in descending order) and provide commentary (sometimes with a little sarcasm).

NOTICE:  By reading this column you may be able to use the information to impress your family, friends, and co-workers, so consider yourself warned.

This week I write about President Obama’s budget, fundraising for the Presidential library, executive pay, the Postal Service, unemployment, Sally Jewell, Montana Legislature, Anthony Weiner, Carol the elephant, obesity, K.C. Royals, egg salad, and much more!

3,800,000,000,000

President Obama’s 2014 budget is $3.8 trillion.

The national debt is approaching $16.8 trillion – just sayin…

500,000,000

That’s how much ($500 million) former President George W. Bush raised for his Presidential Library which is due to open later this month.

59,000,000

That’s how much the “top 10 executives of a Chicago-based health insurance company that wants to buy Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana made” in salary and bonuses last year.”

I wonder if they have any openings…

25,000,000

The U.S. Postal service loses about $25 million per day (not to mention several letters and packages), but Congress wants them to continue with Saturday mail delivery.

So they will…

346,000

That’s the number of people who filed new claims for unemployment last week which was a decrease of 42,000 from the week before.

Anytime there are decreases in new claims for unemployment, that’s good news.

87

In the U.S. Senate yesterday, that’s how many “Yea” votes Sarah “Sally” Jewell received to be confirmed as the Secretary of Interior.

76

Today is day 76 of the Montana Legislature which is scheduled to last 90 days.

Just a few more days of the circus…

65

That’s how many Montana state representatives (there are 100 total) voted for Senate Bill 107, “the measure that strikes from the state code the obsolete language criminalizing gay sex as deviate sexual conduct.”

That was the right thing to do.

48

Do you remember Anthony Weiner? He’s the former New York Congressman who sent a photo of his “crotch” to some female followers on Twitter. He denied sending it at first and then he came clean and resigned. He is 48 years old and he’s thinking about running for Mayor of New York.

He probably has a better chance of running for Congress again…

39

Carol is a 39-year-old Asian elephant used in the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. She was shot in a drive-by shooting in Tupelo, Mississippi. She is expected to make a full recovery.

That was very cruel. Cruel people suck…

38.5

According to a Gallup poll, “Residents of McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, Texas, continue to be the most likely to be obese, at 38.5%.”

I bet you can get a good steak there…

34

That’s how many Montana state representatives (there are 100 total) voted against Senate Bill 107, “the measure that strikes from the state code the obsolete language criminalizing gay sex as deviate sexual conduct.”

It’s hard to believe that 34 people voted against this bill…

12.5

According to a Gallup poll, “For the third consecutive year, residents of the Boulder, Colo., metro area are the least likely to be obese, at 12.5% in 2012.”

I bet you can get a good salad there…

9

The Kansas City Royals are 6-3 and they have a 1.5 game lead in the American League Central.

Don’t make playoff plans just yet, but this is an improvement for Royals’ fans!

1.50

The Masters Golf Tournament starts today and you can buy an egg salad sandwich there for $1.50.

I like egg salad sandwiches…
