Thursday Numbers

Welcome to Thursday Numbers!  If this is your first time stopping by The Western Word (TWW), Thursday Numbers is where I take a look at the numbers mentioned in the news and provide commentary (often with a touch of sarcasm).

NOTICE:  You will gain an immeasurable amount of knowledge by reading this column!  You will probably be able to use this knowledge to impress your family, friends and co-workers!  At least it might be something to use as trivia!  The information might even be life-changing.  Consider yourself warned…

This week I write about campaign ads, unemployment, Petrino, nude maids, Romney making stuff up, communists and unicorns, birthdays, popular governors, Ann Romney tweets, and much more…

3,500,000

According to The Hill, “The National Republican Senatorial Committee has reserved $25 million in television ad space for the fall election.”  This includes $3.5 million for Montana to defeat Democrat Senator Jon Tester.

A tsunami of campaign ads will be hitting Montana television stations in late August…

380,000

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, “In the week ending April 7, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 380,000, an increase of 13,000 from the previous week’s revised figure of 367,000.”

That’s 380,000 NEW claims – and it is not good news.

4,300

Former Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino and his “friend” Jessica Dorrell “exchanged more than 4,300 text messages and nearly 300 phone calls over the past seven months – on game days, before dawn and even as the police report that hastened his downfall was being released to the public, according to a review of his business cellphone records by The Associated Press.”

Petrino is such a loser…

100

According to this story, it costs $100 an hour for nude maid service in Lubbock, Texas.

Yowzer…

92

Mitt Romney claims “92.3 percent of all the jobs lost during the Obama years have been lost by women.”  The Associated Press calls that claim “dubious at best.”

Romney is really out of touch with most Americans…

78

Republican U.S. Representative Allen West of Florida said he “believes 78 to 81 House Democrats are members of the Communist Party.”

I wonder if Rep. West believes in unicorns…

It appears the “15 minutes of fame” for the Tea Party is about over…

65

Happy 65th birthday to talk show host David Letterman.

62

Happy 62nd birthday to David Cassidy of The Partridge Family fame.

I was in love with Laurie Partridge

30

According to the Associated Press, Montana District Judge John McKeon “ruled Wednesday that no additional bison can be transferred in the state for at least 30 days.”

This issue has become messy.  I think this is more of a Federal issue…the bison were moved from a national park to a reservation…

12

According to USA Today, “Charles Manson was denied parole today for the 12th time for his role in leading a murderous cult that horrified the nation 43 years ago with a two-night killing rampage in Los Angeles.”  Manson is 77 years old.

9

According to this story, Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer (D) is the ninth most popular governor.  The most popular is New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) and second was New Jersey Governor Chris Christie (R).

But can Christie and Cuomo veto bills with a branding iron….

3

According to this story, “The NCAA put Baylor on three years of probation Wednesday after an investigation turned up hundreds of impermissible telephone calls and text messages sent to prep recruits by coaches and assistants on the basketball teams.”

2

As of this morning, that is how many Tweets Ann Romney (@AnnDRomney), wife of GOP Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, had tweeted.  She has over 15,500 followers…

I wonder if the Romney’s hired someone to Tweet for her…
