Another week of football is in the books and, sadly, I went 9-4 for the week on my NFL pick contest. That means no free pizza for me.
Just about every Tuesday during football season, I take a look at some of the NFL teams, major college and FCS games and also throw in a few pieces of info you won’t get anywhere else.
This week we take a look at a couple of birthdays, the handshake, the 1929 Packers, beer prices, the BCS, a place for scores, and much more!
NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE
DITKA! – Former Chicago Bears player and coach Mike Ditka turns 72 today!
Impressive #1:
The San Francisco 49ers are 5-1 – their only loss being in overtime to the Dallas Cowboys in week two. They beat the undefeated Lions (in Detroit) on Sunday. Jim Harbaugh is in his first year as coach, too, which is also impressive in that there was a lockout that prevented him from coaching.
The Handshake:
By now everyone knows that Lions coach Jim Schwartz and 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh had some words after the end of game handshake. Harbaugh shook Schwartz’s hand and slapped him across the back a little too hard. Schwartz followed Harbaugh down the field and they had to be separated and then there was some pushing and shoving between players and team personnel. Here’s the VIDEO.
I thought Harbaugh was a little too excited after the victory – he was dancing around and at one time kind of pulling up his shirt to expose his belly – which looked very silly. Then Schwartz looked like a moron running after Harbaugh. The smarter players in the video are the ones who put their helmets on to fight. One thing for sure, the cameras will be on both coaches as they walk off the field in the weeks ahead. The NFL said late Monday that they won’t fine either coach.
Lions:
The big test for the Lions (5-1) will be how they handle the first loss of the season. This week they host the Falcons (3-3). The Lions had not lost since week 13 of last year (including the preseason) until they met the 49ers.
Impressive #2:
The Green Bay Packers are 6-0 – the only undefeated team. It is too early to talk about matching the 1972 Dolphins.
The 1929 Packers:
If you caught any of the Green Bay Packers hosting the St. Louis Rams game on Sunday, then you noticed the 1929 uniforms the Packers were wearing. Here’s the press release with a photo.
The uniforms were ugly…but the Packers are the only undefeated team (6-0).
Monday Night Football:
The best part of the announcing crew for Monday Night Football (MNF), Jon Gruden, has signed on for another five years.
Now if they could just replace Mike Tirico…
Loserville:
The Indianapolis Colts, St. Louis Rams, and the Miami Dolphins are the only teams without a win so far this season. Some folks are calling it a “suck for Luck” watch as Stanford QB Andrew Luck is a QB that is supposed to have an impact on the NFL team that drafts him (or trades the draft rights to him).
Stadium Beer Prices:
According to SaveOnBrew.com “The lowest price to grab a cup of suds was at a Cleveland Browns home game ($5.00) while the stadium that commands the most expensive brew was Edward Jones Dome, home of the St. Louis Rams, at $9.00 per twenty ounce serving.”
Check out the prices at your favorite stadium HERE.
Weekly Honors:
Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ QB Josh Freeman threw for 303 yards and two touchdowns in the 26-20 win over the New Orleans Saints Sunday and San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore ran for 141 yards and one TD on 15 carries in the 49ers’ 25-19 win over the Detroit Lions.

MAJOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL
“Whoa, Nellie!” – Former College Football announcer, Keith Jackson, turns 83 today.
It looks like there are about 10 undefeated teams in major college football which means we may be heading for another train wreck in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS).
Speaking of the BCS:
The rankings came out on Sunday. Here are the top eight (all undefeated):
1. LSU
2. Alabama
3. Oklahoma
4. Oklahoma State
5. Boise State
6. Wisconsin
7. Clemson
8. Stanford
By the way, Kansas State (11) and Houston (19) are both undefeated, too.
Coming Up:
A few major college games to watch next weekend:
(20) Auburn at (1) LSU
(6) Wisconsin at (16) Michigan State
(25) Washington at (8) Stanford.
(4) Oklahoma State at Missouri (Mizzou is tough at home)
FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP SUBDIVISION
The Montana State Bobcats sit on top the Big Sky Conference at 4-0. The Montana Grizzlies are 4-1. Weber State is 3-1. Surprisingly after starting 0-4, the Eastern Washington Eagles are now 3-4 overall and 3-2 in the Big Sky Conference.
Montana State Bobcats:
The Bobcats easily handled the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks last week in Bozeman and now head to Northern Colorado to take on the winless Bears. There are just four games left in the regular season.
On Saturday, Bobcats QB DeNarius McGhee was 18/22 for 247 yards and threw three touchdown passes (1 INT.) and RB Cody Kirk rushed 24 times for 142 yards and a touchdown. Good performances!
Montana Grizzlies:
The Griz came from behind to beat the Portland State Vikings 30-24 in Missoula on Saturday. Griz RB Jordan Canada rushed for 159 yards and a touchdown. The Griz QBs (mostly Johnson) again floundered only completing 10 of 20 attempts for 128 yards and one interception. The Grizzlies travel to Northern Arizona to take on the Lumberjacks this Saturday. It will be interesting to see who plays as there were several injuries during the last game that may sideline some players.
Honors:
Congratulations go out to Montana State Bobcats defensive end Brad Daly for being named the Big Sky Conference co-defensive Player of the Week and to Montana Grizzlies kicker/punter Brody McKnight for being named the special teams Player of the Week.
HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
Montana Prep Sports:
There’s one place to stop for all of your Montana High School football (and other sports) scores and that is MT Prep Sports. You can check out news, scores, and there’s a forum to post stories. Under the “Scores” tab you can see a Twitter feed that picks up all Tweets with the #MTScores hashtag. I’ll see you there most Friday nights…
