Caught My Eye…

Oh yes…a September Friday.  Thankfully the warm weather has stuck around for us to enjoy.  One of the local weather people recently said people were probably getting a little tired of this weather.

Nope.

We got a little taste of the NFL last night and if you’re a fan like me, we can’t wait until the rest of the teams play on Sunday and Monday!  There are college and high school games tonight and Saturday, too.  Football is in full swing!

If you are new around here, Caught My Eye is my weekly column where I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week – and sometimes I poke fun at them.

This week we talk about football, Montana Little League, keeping your helmet on, the President’s speech, ribs, free speech, and we also look at some e-mails from my political inbox.  So read on and thanks for stopping by!

Griz Honors:

Montana’s Little League team will be honored at the University of Montana Grizzlies’ 2011 home opener against the Cal Poly Mustangs on Saturday.  They will be recognized between the first and second quarters.

That is cool.

Never Too Old:

“A 61-year-old college junior in Alabama said he will become the oldest man to play football with a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics team.”  Story HERE.

Heck yes!  I think I could play at least one play…

The President’s Speech:

Last night Jake Tapper of ABC News tweeted the following statement:

dear press secretaries sending me statements written before the speech: it’s obvious. i shant use them. have a great night lazyboneses!

Come on Jake, they just wanted to watch the game…

I Like Ribs:

“A central Pennsylvania man has been charged for a second time with trying to steal a rack of ribs by shoving them down his pants.” Story HERE.

I can see this happening more and more with the way the economy is these days.

No Limits:

Lee Newspapers is reporting, “American Tradition Partnership and other conservative groups have filed another lawsuit targeting Montana’s election laws, this time trying to strike down the state ban on corporate donations to candidates and remove campaign donation limits.”

One thing they can’t take away from me is my vote.  We have to have some limits or only millionaires and the companies/groups who “own” them will be elected.  Wait…

Interruption:

We interrupt this column to put a plug in for this website and to ask that you follow The Western Word (TWW) on Twitter @TheWesternWord.  TWW does not belong to any political organization nor do we get free advertising from any television, radio stations or newspapers.  We are completely independent of any political group or politician.  Now back to the column…

My Political Inbox:

Almost every week we take a peek of what I received in my inbox from the politicians.  We put some of the e-mails in this column and sometimes poke a little fun at them. Enjoy…

-President Barack Obama sent me an e-mail last night with the subject, “Before I head to the Capitol” in which he writes, “I’m about to head to the Capitol to ask Congress to act on my plan to put Americans back to work.”

At the end of the e-mail, he also writes, “This campaign isn’t funded by Washington lobbyists or corporate interests. It relies on donations from people like you. You should donate today.”

It’s all about the next election, huh?

-Montana GOP Governor Candidate Rick Hill sent an e-mail with the subject “Next steps” in which he writes, “Though I’ve been on the road full time for months now, we’re in the process of ramping up our campaign and expanding our effort.  In the coming weeks you’ll see my campaign name a running mate, bring on additional campaign staff, and roll out new policy proposals to address all the problems we’ve identified and studied in the past few months.”

Oh, oh, OH- job openings!  The big question for Hill is which Billings area person will he select as his running mate?  Send rumors about Hill’s running mate to my e-mail listed on the top right side of this page – you will remain anonymous.  Hill also asks people to donate $20.12.  Cute.

-Erik Iverson, Campaign Manager of Rehberg for Senate, fired off a press release yesterday with the subject, “Help Stop The Spending Madness” in which he writes, “We need your help.  As we speak, President Obama and his leftist allies in the Senate are drafting up yet another round of so-called “stimulus” spending.  They actually believe that they can spend their way out of the economic mess they created.”  He continues with, “Just a small donation of $5, $10, $50, $200 or $500 will help Denny send a clear message to Washington that ‘enough is enough, the spending stops now’.”

It’s all about the next election, huh?

-The Jon Tester Senate campaign sent an e-mail with the subject, “REMINDER: RSVP for A Day on the Farm” in which he reminds us about the “An afternoon of Family Fun! Barbecue, Montana brews, music and games for all ages.”

You can go for $50 and your kids are free.  You can really have a good time as a sponsor for $500.

It’s all about the next election, huh? (But I do wonder what Jon and Sharla will do with the leftovers…)

Keep Your Helmet on:

“A high school running back in Arkansas wants to slither through defenses, not have a snake slither inside his helmet.” Story HERE.

My high school coaches always said, “Keep your helmet on” and other things I can’t repeat here…
