Thursday Numbers

Welcome to Thursday – also called the day before Friday – you’ve just about got this week under your belt!  Congratulations!

Today in “Thursday Numbers” we take a look at salaries, unemployment, the stock market, Facebook “likes,” a fish, veterans, states that lean Republican and Democrat, and much more!

If you are going to read one column on The Western Word website this week, this is it – so that you can be in the know – Click on “more” ( if you don’t see the whole column) to be in the know…and dazzle your friends…

17,000,000

That’s how much money NBC’s Matt Lauer makes annually – $17 million.

Do people really need that much money?  I’d like to find out…

395,000

That’s the number of first-time unemployment claims filed last week.  Most folks are falling off the radar as they have exhausted all their benefits and no longer have to check in with their unemployment offices.

You won’t see very many politicians issuing a press release about these numbers.  Things are just pretty tough out there folks…

519

That’s the number of points the stock market lost yesterday – about 5 percent.

Things are getting kind of dicey in the United States these days…two words: fruit jar.

118

That’s the number of people on Facebook (as of this morning) who “Like” the page “Veterans for Tester.”  The e-mail to join the group was sent yesterday.

Smart move by the Tester campaign to start this page – Veterans vote and they will be a very important group to win in 2012.

67

That’s the number of years it took to honor a WWII Veteran with a Bronze Star and several other medals.  The medals and awards were presented to the veteran’s family by U.S. Senator Jon Tester yesterday in Great Falls – and the story made headlines around the state.  Salute!

Besides honoring our veterans, these ceremonies make great photo ops and give free publicity for politicians. Look for more of  these in the next year…

Did I mention that the veterans vote and they will be a very important group to win in 2012?

19:

That’s the estimated age of a largemouth bass that was caught (and released) by a 10-year old boy in Montana recently.

The bass was carrying his birth certificate when caught – Donald Trump verified it…not really, it had been tagged at five years old back in 1997.  I have some good fish stories, too…

According to a new Gallup Poll, Montana is the ninth “most Republican” state.  Can you guess which states are the most Republican and which lean Democratic?  Read the results HERE.

For some reason, Montanans like Democrats running the state-wide offices (except for the U.S. House) and the Republicans running the state legislature…

According to the Great Falls Tribune, “U.S. Sen. Max Baucus has agreed to attend four public open-houses this week to hear about a proposal to add protections to lands along the Rocky Mountain Front.”

That’s nice…but the champion of attending meetings in Montana is Congressman Denny Rehberg.
