If it’s Thursday, then it must be time for The Western Word to post some numbers for the week! This week we take a look at new unemployment claims, Spenditol views, “Likes” for Tester, an historical building closes, a date with football, children being harmed, and much more!
Just to let you know -it’s OK with your boss if you take a few minutes and read today’s column…your boss is probably reading it, too, so relax and grab a drink and read on…
398,000
That’s the number of people filing first-time unemployment claims last week. This is the first time that number has been under 400,000 since April.
If you’ve got a job, cherish it…
17,433
That’s the number of on-line views (as of this morning) that the political campaign ad called “Spenditol” has received – and that’s just the Montana advertisement. The Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee (CWALAC) is responsible for the ad which, in my opinion, is pretty funny. You can watch it HERE.
4393
That’s the number of people (as of this morning) who “Like” the Facebook page called “Women for Tester.”
Social media is being used in Montana politics – at least by some candidates…
442
That’s the number of followers I have on Twitter. You should be following me @TheWesternWord – you can do it before it becomes “cool” to follow Jack…
102
That’s the number of years the Walter Reed Army Medical Center was open. They held the closing ceremony yesterday at the hospital.
Just think about the history there…and the patriots who went through the doors there. Salute!

That’s the amendment many democrats want President Obama to use to solve the debt ceiling problem, referring to Section Four:
The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned. But neither the United States nor any State shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void.

August 11 is the date of the first NFL preseason games! I am ready for some football!

That’s the number of minutes the Minuteman III missile lasted after being launched over the Pacific Ocean. It was destroyed after an anomaly was detected. The missile was reportedly from Malmstrom AFB, Montana. The maintenance and operations task force members were also from Malmstrom.

Sadly, “the fourth person in less than two months” has been charged with physically harming a child in Cascade County Montana.
I think people who harm children will have a special place in hell…
