Caught My Eye…

If it’s Friday, then it’s another edition of “Caught My Eye!” I want to congratulate you for making it. TGIF.

Spring is in the air and some of us received our first 70 degree day this year, so the last thing on your mind is sitting inside at your computer and reading this column. But we have you covered as The Western Word is available on your mobile device to read when you are sitting in the backyard, at the park, or when traveling! www.TheWesternWord.com

Before we get going, I have to ask a personal question: Do you suffer from friggatriskaidekaphobia?

Friggatriskaidekaphobia is “A morbid, irrational fear of Friday the 13th.” Since today is Friday the 13th, you might be showing symptoms!

Now is the time to sit back, relax, and read Caught My Eye…

Houston Has a Problem:

The United States Postal Service will observe National Dog Bite Prevention Week next week. They released the list of which cities the letter carriers are bitten in the most. Houston Texas leads the nation (by a lot).

I’d bet most of the owners said, “Fido won’t bite, he’s friendly, and he loves kids…”

Beer Delivery?

Here’s an idea for a small business: Beer delivery! This would have prevented this: “A 65-year-old Bridgeport man faces criminal charges after police say he called 911 to solve a beer emergency.”

At least he did not drive…

Remember – If you are in a hole, stop digging!

“Authorities say the 19-year-old had spent much of Sunday digging a hole that was 7 feet deep and 6 feet across.” You can read the rest of the story HERE.

Not Old, Just Experienced?

The 2010 Census data shows Montana is becoming a place for older people…so I think we should be looking for several “Scooter Stores” to open across the state…

A Great Read:

If you have ever been to Kansas City or follow Kansas City sports you might have heard of former Kansas City Star columnist Joe Posnanski, who is now a Senior Writer at Sports Illustrated. He also runs a blog called, “Joe Blogs” and his column “Home in Capital Letters” is a great read.

Raise Taxes?

Jon Tester and Max Baucus want to raise taxes on “Big Oil” by ending their tax breaks. Some are probably wondering how much the price of a gallon of gas will go up if this passes. Most businesses that see their taxes raised (or tax cuts ended) will just pass on the increased cost they incurred to the consumer. Plus, companies may go somewhere else where they can get a sweeter deal.

The Political Inbox:

Just about every week I share some of the political e-mails I received from politicians, political parties, and groups. I also offer some commentary.

Jim Messina who runs Barack Obama’s re-election campaign sent me an e-mail on Sunday with the subject, “Tonight” where he informs me, “Just wanted to make sure you knew that “60 Minutes” is airing an interview with President Obama tonight. It’s the only interview he gave this week, so I hope you take the time to tune in to CBS at 7:00 p.m. ET/PT. You can find your local CBS station here. Hope you’re enjoying your Mother’s Day weekend.”

I did watch it, not because of the e-mail but because I watch 60 Minutes almost every week. The President did fine, but a lot of the information had changed since the interview on Wednesday.

-The folks at the Montana GOP want to know, “Will Bullock Defend Medical Marijuana Regulations?” They sent an e-mail with that subject and asked what Bullock will do.

Steve Bullock is the Montana Attorney General. My answer to that question is that Bullock will run over old ladies and children to get his face on camera. So if there’s a chance of him getting some publicity, he’ll defend it.

-The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) sent an e-mail called “Corporate Welfare” in which they are attempting to raise money on the vote to raise taxes on “Big Oil.” The DSCC wrote, “Just a few days from now the Senate will vote to cut off the taxpayer cash flow. Republicans will try to defend their petroleum pals, so we need you in this fight.  Click here to support Democratic efforts to end Big Oil subsidies. Big Oil makes obscene profits. They shouldn’t be receiving our tax dollars, too.”

Isn’t it funny how the wheels in Washington go round and round?

Jon Tester sent an e-mail from his campaign account saying, “They need to hear from us.” Tester contends “Washington wants to plow Medicare Under.” He then adds, “I promised to make the Senate look a little more like Montana, and I will not sit back and let right-wing politicians make Montana look a LOT more like Washington D.C.”

Huh?
