The President’s Speech

Maybe it’s just me, but last night’s speech from President Obama didn’t seem to do much for me. I did not feel better or worse after hearing it. I kind of did not care, which is sad for me because here we are dropping bombs on a country and killing people and I could not make myself care that much about it. I don’t think others cared either. How about you – the comment section is open!

Are we just so burned out on war that we don’t care about another one? It used to be if we lobbed a bomb on another country, it was big news. Not anymore.

Even the local daily newspaper found just a little bit of room on their front page (at the bottom left corner) to paste a 500-word story from McClatchy which continued on page 6A.

Often local newspapers will get reactions from their readers; I did not see it for this speech. I also did not see any statements from the congressional delegation in the newspaper or hitting my inbox. It is weird when politicians don’t try to use a moment to garner some publicity.

Maybe I missed something? I decided to read the almost 3400 word speech again. Nope, I did not miss anything.

President Obama is not a wartime President (just as the Godfather’s Tom Hagen was not a wartime consigliere). Obama really does not know how to handle the military – he does not talk the talk or walk the walk – and he can’t even pretend well – which happens with many politicians who never served.

Many folks just can’t grasp the fact about Muammar Qaddafi staying in power in Libya, and we really want to know what the plan is – especially to get out of there. Many folks wonder why if the President, “after consulting the bipartisan leadership of Congress” authorized military action why didn’t he go to the full Congress for approval? Many folks wonder since he was not going to gain approval from the whole congress, why didn’t he act sooner to prevent bloodshed. And what’s up with waiting nine days to make a speech to tell us about it?

Nonetheless, Obama gave a very unusual speech and maybe that’s why nobody has much to say about it (unless you may be running for President in 2012).
