WarGames?

Word spread quickly about 50 intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) at F.E. Warren AFB in Wyoming being knocked off-line due to a power outage for about 45 minutes.

Later it was disclosed that the problem was due to a computer glitch.

Calm down folks, it’s no big deal – unless there were UFOs circling the missile squadron.

It was also not Matthew Broderick and his girlfriend Ally Sheedy playing “Global Thermal Nuclear War” either. We all remember the words, “Shall We Play a Game?” from the 1983 movie, WarGames, don’t we?

The fact is that our nuclear weapons in the ground are very safe – probably the safest and secure of all our nuclear weapons. There are checks and balances in the system to prevent someone from driving up to the missile site and throwing the warhead into the bed of their pickup and driving off, and those same checks and balances will prevent somebody who may be having a bad day from launching a nuke. Plus, the people who work in the ICBM world are the best and brightest our country has to offer.

So, it just won’t happen.

The system in place worked like it has done thousands of times over the years since we had intercontinental ballistic missiles – the only difference this time was the media got wind of the glitch and reported it for all to read and comment about.
