“In fourteen hundred ninety-two Columbus sailed the ocean blue.”
You probably remember that poem from school. Today we celebrate Columbus Day – the day that Christopher Columbus “discovered” America (but he actually landed in the Bahamas).
It’s awfully hard to “discover” a place that’s already inhabited.
Probably the biggest thing old Chris did was figure out the world was not flat.
Most of us “older” people were only taught the good things about Columbus. For a different look at Christopher Columbus, I’d suggest reading, “A People’s History of the United States” by Howard Zinn, especially Chapter 1, “Columbus, the Indians, and Human Progress.”
Enjoy the holiday!
