I’d bet some NBA fans are feeling a little hung over this morning after the LeBron James/ESPN dog and pony show last night. I know I am.
It was kind of like waiting for Christmas morning and when all the gifts were opened, you look around and ask yourself, “What now?”
For those of you who don’t follow the NBA, LeBron James decided he would go to the Miami Heat to play basketball. He announced his decision during a special hour-long show on ESPN. The ratings for the show were great.
Breaking News:
Meanwhile, here in the real world: There’s an oil spill in the gulf that may never end. There are two wars going on, one in Afghanistan and one in Iraq. Our unemployment is still too high and, oh yes, our country is broke.
Now, back to the sweet life of LeBron James:
The only good thing about the show was Michael Wilbon and Jon Barry. Their comments and questions kept the show somewhat interesting. They actually kept the event from becoming like an “American Idol” finale.
Unhappy fans in Cleveland burned LeBron’s jersey. The majority owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Dan Gilbert, penned an open letter to the fans. It was not nice toward James. He told the fans, “You simply don’t deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.”
Gilbert also said that James “quit” during the playoffs when the Cavaliers were eliminated by the Boston Celtics. I am a Celtics fan. I thought Boston’s swarming defense just wore James down and nobody else on the team stepped up. The plan against James was simple: Let him get his average in points, but stop everyone else. Boston did it perfectly against the Cavaliers, who had the best record in the NBA. Cleveland fans could taste the championship and now they feel betrayed.
So now the Miami Heat has three great players. They are following the Boston example. The only problem for the Heat now is it takes five players to play the game, just as Boston learned. The Heat will need some players who will play for the minimum salary to get their roster filled. Can the three stars (James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh) play together?
By the way Miami fans, the Boston Celtics are Eastern Conference champs and if Kendrick Perkins had not been injured, they would have been NBA champs. Unfortunately, the title went to Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers.
Now, back to the real world.

It is true that all the commotion and media hype exaggerated things and went a bit overboard. We all know he is great, but it’s not the end of the world. Where Lebron goes doesn’t mean the end of the world or it would solve puberty. Also I just want to point out, that Clevelands majority owner didn’t have to release such statement. We know they are upset and disgusted of Lebron’s decision but that doesn’t mean he should be bitter and curse him in return. After all Lebron did what he can and stayed with the team for 7 years played his heart out, injury and all. And perhaps missed a minimum amount of games showing his determination and passion, but it just so happens that things didn’t work out and Lebron just wanted better for his career and get closer to his goal/dream.
Thanks for your comments. -JtB
