Yawning with Boredom

Back in May when President Obama nominated Elena Kagan to the U.S. Supreme Court, I wrote that there really was not much there and her nomination did not excite me one way or the other.

After a few days of confirmation hearings, nothing much has happened. There were no bombshells or anything that would lead one to believe that she would not be confirmed by the United States Senate.

I think the most important thing to come from these hearings was that we found out that Senator Al Franken was a pretty good artist.

The last three or four confirmation hearings for the Supreme Court have been boring.

Back in May I mentioned this little tidbit regarding Kagan’s 61-31 vote to be confirmed as Solicitor General:

Seven Republicans voted for her then, including Orrin Hatch of Utah. By the way, Hatch better watch out as the righties in Utah may throw him out if he starts voting like a moderate. Since the righties dispensed of a Senator Bennett of Utah last weekend, Hatch may change his vote this time since he is up for reelection in 2012.

Today we find that Senator Hatch is going to vote against Kagan this time. Hatch was on a cable news network during the confirmation hearings and said something along the lines that this time the job was for a lifetime appointment, whereas the Solicitor General’s position was only for a few years. True. After hearing those remarks, it was easy to see that Hatch was positioning himself for a “No” vote.

But anyone who follows politics knows the real reason.

Kagan should get well over 60 votes as America yawns with boredom.
