Since I am taking the day off from work to have an extended Memorial Day weekend, I decided to offer my commentary about the largest oil spill in American history.
Like many Americans, I have been watching the coverage of the spill in the Gulf of Mexico. My heart goes out to the folks on the gulf coast who is suffering through this mess.
CNN has done the best job in covering it. MSNBC is closely behind. FOX, well you guys are pretty lame in your coverage.
I caught President Obama giving his first press conference in months yesterday. Yes, the teleprompter showed up. Sometimes I think the teleprompter knows more about the subject than the person reading it. For sure, it was the case yesterday when Obama talked about the oil spill because when the questions started, he looked like a deer caught in the headlights.
Obama was a “day late and a dollar short” in addressing this disaster. He saw the political danger of getting involved and politics won out. It probably took him over 30 days just to grasp the magnitude of the spill – but he could still do a fundraiser for his California friend.
This is Obama’s Katrina – make no doubt about it. As politics go in Washington, D.C., you can bet the Republicans will show a political commercial with Obama in California at the $17,000 a plate fundraiser and then show oil on a beach in Louisiana with some dying animals and vegetation. That’s what happens when you drop the ball in big-time politics no matter whether your name is Bush or Obama. What goes around comes around.
The Feds should have been there helping the folks in Louisiana and preparing the folks in other places as the oil made its way toward their land. They were not. There were no leaders. Nobody seemed to be in charge. The Feds should have shown up each day and briefed the American people. You do this during disasters. They needed the manpower on the ground to fight the oil heading to shore.
Since the oil spill has made it to the shores, tourism is dead. People who fish for a living are done for the foreseeable future.
As for BP, you are responsible for this mess. We won’t know for months or years what happened, but you can bet we will.
Sure, there will be checks written. Disaster assistance will roll. Fingers will be pointed. Congress will have a hundred or more hearings to get the bottom of the largest oil spill in American history.
Obama is facing the biggest oil spill in American history. He has the economy to get on track and unemployment is staying at record highs. The immigration issue is on the front burner. It appears Obama or his staff tried to bribe a fellow democrat into not running for the U.S. Senate. The current party controlling the White, the U.S. Senate, and the U.S. House are spending more money than anytime in American history.
We need a hero.
