It looks like Bill Mercer, the U.S. Attorney for Montana, has decided to withdraw his name from consideration for the Associate Attorney General position in the Department of Justice.

This is according to a STORY on the AP wire.

Mercer had been nominated way back in September 2006. He was a great choice and I was proud that a Montanan was chosen for a high position in the Justice Department.

But there were problems in the DoJ and with his boss, Attorney General Gonzales, making some tactical errors, the Democrats smelled blood and are holding investigative hearings after investigative hearings. The writing was on the wall and he had no support from Montana’s two U.S. Senators, Max Baucus and Jon Tester.

Mercer will probably come back to Montana and be the U.S. Attorney full time – a U.S. Attorney who was recommended by a Republican which probably makes Baucus and Tester hope that a democrat is elected as President in November 2008, so they can have their say about who from our great state gets this important position next.
