If there’s a time when politicians want a story to get poor press coverage, then they release the details on Friday afternoon. Sometimes even government agencies send out controversial press releases on Friday afternoon to keep the heat to a minimum.
They believe with the weekend approaching, people have more important things to do than read a press release or watch the news, and they are right. Sometimes it works.
The Clintons released their tax returns this afternoon. This afternoon reporters, somewhere, are sitting at a desk looking through the eight years of tax returns trying to see where the $109 million they made came from. This is taking the place of downing a few cold ones at happy hour. They have to work this afternoon, but the story is not getting as much coverage as it would have on Monday.
Another great reason for Clinton to release her tax returns today is because she will be in Montana and North Dakota this weekend, which is kind of a dead spot in the national news. But we know the reporters in these states, before Clinton steps off the plane, will have critically read every page of those returns and, if given a chance, will ask a question about them. Sure we do.
