Thursday Thoughts

Happy Thursday! Let’s dive into today’s common sense takes:

  • Great Falls City Manager
  • Daines & Voting
  • Shelby Schools Superintendent
  • U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin
  • One More Thing

GREAT FALLS CITY MANAGER:

The Electric is reporting that Great Falls City Manager Greg Doyan was given a favorable review during a special meeting on March 17 and a 4 percent raise.

The Electric reports that Doyon’s new annual salary is $216,146.93.

Great googly moogly!

It was also reported that Commissioner Casey Schreiner said he was voting no on the raise due to budget constraints, but not because of Doyon’s performance.

Good for Schreiner. To address current budget constraints, the city should exercise spending restraint.

In comparison, the Governor of Montana earns $141,517 per year. (Source)

DAINES & VOTING:

Lame duck U.S. Senator Steve Daines (R-MT) posted the following comments on social media this week:

“If you need an ID to get a hunting tag & a fishing license, you need an ID to vote.”

Oh, Steve, if we’re requiring a fee to vote because ‘fishing/hunting licenses exist,’ should we also require a CDL to push a stroller since they both have wheels? The 24th Amendment exists specifically to ensure that citizenship isn’t a pay-to-play hobby. Participating in our democracy is a bit more essential to the Republic than legally snagging a walleye. Let’s not mistake a fundamental right for a weekend at the lake.

SHELBY SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT:

KRTV in Great Falls is reporting that on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, the Montana Highway Patrol responded to a rollover crash on I-15 near mile marker 341 in Pondera County.

Elliott Crump of Shelby was identified as the driver and has been charged with driving under the influence (first offense) and failure to give notice of an accident by the quickest means (first offense). Crump is the superintendent of the Shelby School District.

I have been unwavering on this for years: there is absolutely no room for excuses when it comes to drunk driving. It is a betrayal of the public trust. If you are caught behind the wheel intoxicated while serving in a leadership or elected role, you have forfeited your right to lead. Period. You should resign immediately or be fired. I have demanded accountability from State Legislators and the Superintendent of Public Instruction alike—because if you put lives at risk, you don’t deserve to hold a position of power.

U.S. SENATOR MARKWAYNE MULLIN:

I caught some of U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin’s (R-OK) Department of Homeland Security confirmation hearing today, and honestly, he doesn’t seem like much of an upgrade over Noem.

Fellow Republican Rand Paul won’t vote for him, and the grilling Paul gave Mullin was one for the ages.

ONE MORE THING:

You can take the Ayatollah out of Iran, but you can’t take Trump out of the Epstein Files.
