Caught My Eye…

Caught My Eye…

It’s Friday! Here are the topics that caught my eye for today’s column:

  • Cascade County Attorney
  • Chaos inside the CDC
  • Minneapolis School Shooting
  • One More Thing

CASCADE COUNTY ATTORNEY:

I remember back when the Cascade County Attorney and Sheriff could not get elected unless they were Democrats. That changed a few years ago when the current Sheriff, Jesse Slaughter, changed from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party.

On Wednesday, Cascade County Attorney Josh Racki, a Democrat, announced on Facebook that he was switching to the Republican Party, stating:

For the past several years, we have watched the Democratic party change its stance on law enforcement.

Movements to “defund the police,” attacks on law enforcement officials and officers, and putting criminals before victims has gone too far. The Republican Party puts the safety and freedom of law-abiding citizens first by standing with law enforcement.

Racki continues with:

For twenty years I have served the people of Cascade County with fairness and integrity. Today, I announce I am joining the Republican Party. This decision comes after a lot of thought, and only strengthens my ability to protect citizens, safeguard constitution and relentlessly pursue justice.

I don’t think I have ever voted for Racki. He has made some questionable decisions in the past that I did not agree with. I think the Cascade County Attorney’s office needs new people. If nobody runs against Racki, I will leave that part of the ballot blank.

Do these Democrats switching to the Republican Party mean they are RINOs (Republicans in Name Only)?

CHAOS INSIDE THE CDC:

It appears that the politicization of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is in full swing. This is not good for our country.

The Hill and other sources are reporting that at least four top officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) submitted their resignations on Wednesday, saying the recent changes and leadership at their agency are preventing them from fulfilling their duties as public health authorities.

I don’t think we will be able to trust the information coming out of the CDC while the Trump (Kennedy) Administration is in charge.

It was also reported that Jim O’Neill, a top deputy to Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., will serve as acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  O’Neill is a science and technology investor.

Dr. Debra Houry, the CDC Chief Medical Officer, wrote in her resignation:

“For the good of the nation and the world, the science at CDC should never be censored or subject to political paused or interpretations. Vaccines save lives — this is an indisputable, well-established, scientific fact.”

MINNEAPOLIS SCHOOL SHOOTING:

The MAGAs led by Fox News were out in force, placing blame on the Minneapolis School Shooting. We had Jesse Watters of Fox News saying it was a “trans violence epidemic,” even though data shows trans people are more likely to be on the receiving end of violence. (Source)

Of course, another Fox comic, Greg Gutfeld, chimed in with his thoughts about trans people and violence. (Source)

It must be tiring for these MAGAs to have to toe the political line day in and day out by spreading lies and hatred.

The best comments to come from the MAGA crowd that I saw came from First Lady Melania Trump on social media:

The tragic mass killing in Minnesota illuminates the need for pre-emptive intervention in identifying potential school shooters. Early warning signs are often evident, with many individuals exhibiting concerning behaviors and making violent threats online prior to their actions.

To prevent future tragedies, it is crucial we look into behavioral threat assessments across all levels of society—beginning in our homes, extending through school districts and of course, social media platforms. Being aware of these warning signs and acting quickly can save lives and make American communities safer. (Source)

She also said:

My heart is shattered for the families and friends of the victims of today’s senseless and depraved violent act.

There is nothing that anyone can say to make your grief go away, but please know that you are not alone. My thoughts, love, and deepest sympathy are with you during this dreadful time. (Source)

ONE MORE THING:

Today I’m choosing kindness, but we’ll see…it’s still early.

## HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND ##

1 thought on “Caught My Eye…

  1. “The Republican Party puts the safety and freedom of law-abiding citizens first by standing with law enforcement.”

“Stand with law enforcement” except, of course, when that law enforcement is protecting Congress from a howling mob of Republicans. Or when the leader of the party you are joining unconditionally pardons people who came to the Capitol prepared for battle and then attacked and beat on law enforcement. Or when judges tell Republican politicians to cease their unlawful activities but the politicians just ignore them. Etc. Then the Republican Party just turns its back on law enforcement.

Going to real difficult to trust the words and actions of Racki and his county prosecutors going forward knowing he has cast his lot with the party of Trump who tramples on the rule of law.

As for the narrative around trans people and mass shootings, Reuters News service has some actual stats:

“Transgender individuals represent less than 1 percent of perpetrators in all mass shootings over the past decade, and about 2 percent involved in school shootings specifically, according to The Gun Violence Archive (GVA).”

    https://www.reuters.com/fact-check/most-mass-school-shootings-are-not-carried-out-by-transgender-people-2024-09-06/

And knowing that people who commit such crimes are often suffering from mental issues resulting from being bullied / hated / discriminated against and whatever, you really have to marvel at the self-awareness of MAGAs who simply continue to pile more and more of that kind of bullying / hate / discrimination on any group they do not like and thus create more mass shooters.
