The Wednesday Read

Here we go! These are the topics for today’s independent commentary:

  • Daines Senate Majority Fund
  • U.S. House Funding Bill
  • Prepper Food Supply
  • One More Thing

DAINES SENATE MAJORITY FUND:

The Steve Daines for Montana campaign team sent an email asking for donations. The subject was “I’m in serious trouble.”

Here is part of the message:

As Chair of the National Republican Senate Committee, I humiliated Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats in 2024 by flipping 4 Democrat seats and retaking the Senate Majority.

Now Democrats are out for revenge and have put a target on my back. They’ll spend whatever it takes to make an example of me and end our Republican Majority.

Another thing that Daines did in 2024 is leave the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) $24 million in debt. (Source)

We’ll hear and see a lot from Daines in the coming months because he is up for reelection in 2026. Will we see an in-person town hall from Daines that is open to the public? I doubt it.

Right now it looks pretty good for Daines to win reelection. Things can change pretty quickly, though. Maybe the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) will backfire and cause voters to throw out some incumbents.

U.S. HOUSE FUNDING BILL:

The Associated Press (AP) is reporting that the U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation Tuesday to avert a partial government shutdown and fund federal agencies through September, providing critical momentum as the measure now moves to the Senate, where bipartisan support will be needed to get it over the finish line.

The vote was 217-213. Two members did not vote. Montana’s two U.S. Representatives, Ryan Zinke and Troy Downing, voted for the bill. (Source)

Now the hard part begins. The AP also reported that in the Senate, they’ll need support from at least eight Democrats to get the bill to President Donald Trump’s desk. It’s one of the biggest legislative tests so far of the Republican president’s second term, prompting Vice President JD Vance to visit Capitol Hill on Tuesday morning to rally support.

If the bill does not pass the U.S. Senate and the government shuts down, we’ll hear the political blame game go full throttle.

The deadline to pass the bill is Friday night at midnight.

PREPPER FOOD SUPPLY:

I’ve joked in the past (or was it a joke) about living in an underground bunker where I have food, water, and ammo stored for the day it hits the fan.

Sadly we are facing very uncertain times. Retirees may not get their checks, people are losing their jobs, and it seems our President is trying to be a dictator.

I happened to hear an ad from 4Patriots in which they are offering a “buy one meal kit and get two free meal kits” deal. The price is $29. That’s three 72-Hour Survival Food Kits for the price of one. They will last 25 years. Each kit is for three people.

ONE MORE THING:

Sometimes, you meet someone and you know from the first moment you want to spend the rest of your life without them.

  1. Hi Jackie,

Good and accurate discussion of Daines new complaints. He certainly wants to get the stink of Trump’s election off of himself and blame others for our current crisis.

But I also want to mention, as a follow up to my previous comment and your comment yesterday about the plan for a new court to hear Constitutional challenges.

Just today, two of the 2023 Legislatures’ draconion abortion laws relating to people on medicaid needing abortion care were struck down by a District Court Judge just yesterday. No wonder they want another Court made up of Judges selected by the Governor to hear these cases! They need the “fix” to be put in on the Court system.

This is an incredibily dangerous process for our legislature to pursue. We all need to talk about it.

This newesr case will only add fuel to the fire.

    • I heard about the court throwing out the laws. Crazy times! Thanks, JmB
