The Monday Memo

Howdy! Here are the topics for today’s independent commentary:

  • 27 Bills
  • Open Letter to Sheehy
  • Trump & Meet the Press

27 BILLS:

The MAGA Republicans in the Montana Legislature are unhappy with the judicial branch in Montana, so one of their goals in the next session is to curtail some of that power.

The Daily Montanan is reporting that Republicans on the Senate Select Committee on Judicial Oversight and Reform will have 27 bills ready for introduction in the 2025 legislative session that starts in January, several of which seek to move some power away from the judicial branch or make judicial elections partisan.

The MAGAs are pissed that many of their MAGA-supported laws passed last session have been found unconstitutional. They don’t seem to care about individual rights or the constitutionality of the laws.

I love that our Judicial Branch acts as a check for the bat-shit crazy bills that pass the legislature. When all is said and done, they seem to be the only branch that really cares about us.

OPEN LETTER TO SHEEHY:

Peter D. Fox writes an “An open letter to Senator-elect Sheehy” that I happened to see in the Daily Montanan.

I found this part interesting:

Finally, with less than a month before you take your oath of office, it is time to communicate with us. Your campaign made the purposeful choice to limit your public appearances to only selected audiences and friendly radio hosts or with MAGA-conservative national media.

During the campaign you made a point to tell event attendees that you purposely avoided newspaper and television questions and interviews, and they should ignore news reports and instead listen to you and your surrogates. Your campaign spokespeople were largely un-responsive to requests for one-on-ones, comment or information.

He also tells Sheehy:

And please keep in mind that reporters and editors are nowhere as fearsome as the Taliban.

TRUMP & MEET THE PRESS:

President-elect Donald Trump did an interview with “Meet the Press” moderator Kristen Welker that aired on Sunday. It gives us a glimpse of what we can expect that Trump will try to do after he is sworn in on January 20, 2025.

NBC News reported that Trump said, “you have no choice” but to deport everyone who is illegally in the U.S., including possibly removing the American citizen family members of those deported.

Trump also said he will move to end birthright citizenship — long enshrined in the 14th Amendment of the Constitution — which would strip rights from those born in the country to undocumented parents.

He also talked about pardoning capitol rioters and said the January 6 committee members should go to jail.

  1. This is the text of a LTE I sent to the Montana Standard. It hasn’t appeared yet.

“Front page headline on Sun, 8 December read, “GOP FOCUS ON JUDICIAL REFORM”. I think this was a very poor choice of words. More accurate would have been, “GOP FOCUS ON KNEECAPPING JUDICIARY.”

It surprises and disappoints me that they are so brazenly intent on violating our entire history of three co-equal branches of government that provide checks and balances in the political process. They are most proud of the actions that should make them most ashamed.”

    • Exactly. They want to limit the judiciary even though they are co-equal. Thanks, JmB

  2. The Daily Montanan may not be as fearsome as the Taliban but they didn’t generate over 7 hit pieces from 10-4 to 11-4.

Surprisingly, no criticisms of their beloved Tester.

    Tim owes them nothing.

    • You’re right. Sheehy does not owe the Daily Montanan anything. He does owe all Montanans information and access no matter for who they voted. -JmB

      • Find it ironic that Tester avoided unfriendly reporting outlets, only communicating with his surrogates.

        Turn about is fair play.

      • I don’t think that is true.
MAGAs think every outlet not Fox News is unfriendly.
Tester did plenty of interviews. I never saw him run from a reporter like Sheehy did with CNN.
It does not matter now. Sheehy will have to live with what he decides to do with the media. -JmB

      • You say his silence with the DM, Lee Newspapers and other unfriendlies will hurt him?

Not a chance. If you want to listen to Tim and what his goals are tune in to AM talk radio.

      • I gave up on AM talk radio 10 years ago. No tough questions. No journalism. No standards. I guess I won’t hear his “goals” for six years. -JmB
