Thursday Thoughts

Hello, August! You’re looking hot!

Here are the topics for today’s column:

  • Trump Rally in Bozeman
  • Indian or Black
  • One More Thing

TRUMP RALLY IN BOZEMAN:

Montana Talks statewide radio show host Aaron Flint announced that former President Donald Trump will be holding a rally in Bozeman on the evening of August 9 at 8:00 p.m. More details will follow. The rally is to help U.S. Senate candidate Tim Sheehy, according to Flint.

The Montana MAGAs on social media are giddy over the announcement.

This is about the sixth time Trump has held a rally in Montana. This will be the sixth time I have not attended his rally.

Have I mentioned lately that I’ve never voted for Trump and never will?

In the 2018 U.S. Senate race, the Trump family camped out in Montana to try and help Republican Matt Rosendale defeat U.S. Senator Jon Tester. They failed as Tester easily beat Rosendale by about 18,000 votes.

I’m sure we’ll hear Trump attack Tester. One of the more interesting things is that most of the bills that Trump signed into law during his term as President to help veterans were authored by Tester.

We know that Trump will win Montana and the diehard MAGA folks are already voting for Sheehy. Tester will beat Sheehy. Trump wasting his time here is good for Kamala Harris. She is already catching him and/or beating him in many polls. He should be campaigning in battleground states, but the hatred of Tester consumes the Trump family.

INDIAN OR BLACK:

We know that former President Donald Trump is a racist. Some articles, like this one, list most of his racist remarks and actions.

A few years ago, when Trump was caught on tape saying offensive things about women (grab em…), I thought this was as low as he could go.

He’s lowered the bar several times since then. A jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing advice columnist E. Jean Carroll in 1996.

On Wednesday, Trump attacked Vice President Kamala Harris for her heritage. Reuters has the story:

U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump falsely suggested to the country’s largest annual gathering of Black journalists on Wednesday that his Democratic rival Kamala Harris had previously downplayed her Black heritage.
“She was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn’t know she was Black, until a number of years ago, when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black,” Trump said, drawing a smattering of jeers from an audience of about 1,000 people.
“So I don’t know, is she Indian or is she Black? Trump continued. “But you know what, I respect either one, but she obviously doesn’t, because she was Indian all the way, and then all of a sudden she made a turn, and she went – she became a Black person.”

Many sources report that Harris has long identified as Black and Asian.

It’s a negative mark on the United States that Trump is a political party’s nominee. He can’t stand strong women and he does not like anyone with a different skin tone. Since the polls are starting to turn in Harris’ favor, Trump is resorting to racial attacks and nasty politics. This will only cause more women to vote for Harris.

ONE MORE THING:

I have been watching the Olympics and enjoying it. One piece of information I read was interesting.

The 1992 men’s Olympic basketball team (the Dream Team) only faced nine NBA players from other countries. The 2024 men’s Olympic basketball team will face 61 NBA players from 11 other countries. (Source)

  1. What with all of the unanswered questions with regard to policy and here everybody is talking about race and golf.

Purveyors of the smoke and mirrors strategy are pretty much on their A game these days it seems because they’ve got everyone talking about things that don’t matter.

Identity politics is all some people have because they don’t possess the critical thinking skills that might be required to get on with the business of real policy. Policy to these people amounts to only parroting what some other non critical thinking individual said the year before and the year before that.

These are the people that rank, belittle, and demean others because they don’t have anything of value to say.

Both sides do this sort of thing and all it does is waste our time.

As soon as somebody starts going on about race … I’m out.

As soon as somebody starts going on about this is the first this that or the other with regard to race, gender, or heritage … I’m out.

I don’t have time for that.

What I do have time for is the discussions that might involve real policy. Policy that might benefit all of us and not just the select few on either side.

So far, I haven’t heard anything of any substantial consequence with regard to policy from either of these Presidential candidates. All I hear is opinion. What “they” are going to do.

The personal opinions of the politician should never be mistaken for policy.

I’ll vote policy over opinion any day of the week and I don’t care about things like skin tone, ancestry, or all of that other B.S. they try to distract us with.

  2. I used to take my husband aside when we were pitching clients. “Do you want to win an argument or win this account?” Trump seems less interested in winning the account. Kamala is trying harder.

  3. I can relate to Kamala Harris – I’m of mixed racial heritage also – my lineage includes Scots-Irish by way of Tidewater VA – they escaped ahead of the law. It includes English – from the prison transports sent to early New England. It includes Plattdeutch – trying to get away from the Prussian overlords. It includes American Indian – a Blackfeet great-great-grandmother from the “schools” in Oklahoma. She buried 6 husbands. It includes Black ex-slaves who helped run the Underground Railroad and volunteered in the Civil War.

The one thing they all shared……..they didn’t look down on anyone. They knew what they were worth, and they made sure their children and grandchildren lived up to their own potential also.

So, yes I relate to Kamala Harris. I would be ashamed if I thought my ancestry included anyone like Trump.

    • Thanks, Fred. Good stuff. There are many people out there just like you. I don’t think Trump is winning any points with them. -JmB

  4. ”The 1992 men’s Olympic basketball team (the Dream Team) only faced nine NBA players from other countries. The 2024 men’s Olympic basketball team will face 61 NBA players from 11 other countries. (Source)”, said Jackie in the comments above.

And it’s true. But the rest of the story as to how this all came about is a fascinating true story. It all started with an American coach who introduced basketball to Europe back in the fifties. His name was Jim McGregor, and he was a family friend. His brother and my dad were best friends. Jim was real character. Ex-Marine from WWII, coach, college athlete, and all round iconoclast and hell raiser. As far as I know he’s the only guy to win coach of the year at Whitworth college and get fired at the same time for not quite adhering to the Christian values of the school! Jim liked to party with the ladies, and did so around the world! He brought many of the original great European players to this country.

He wrote a book called, Called for Traveling. I think you can still find a copy on the net. But if you really love basketball like I do, it’s worth a read!

  5. At 3pm today received email from Senator Daines(probably all voters did) on official Senate site that once again he is fighting for me to protect me from evil of the mockery of the Christian faith, that vulgar display at opening of the Olympics. He is a little late to the MEGA outrage by week, but probably it may come up in Trump’s Bozeman rally so of course he want to be on far right side, when he will be on stage kissing Trump’s behind. Somehow this certainly must be an important campaign issue to attack Tester on somehow. Daines is so phony it’s hard to really respect him. I’d like to know exactly how he plans on doing something about this since the US government doesn’t provide any funds to Team USA. I’d be surprised if Daines even watched any of the Olympics. He seldom attends Montana sporting events because he would actually have to be around real Montana voters.

    • I agree. Daines is phony. He’s on the clock next (up for reelection in 2026). I hope the Dems find a good candidate to take him on. -JmB

  6. Time for the pathetic old pervert criminal to step aside for the good of the country. The whole world is watching, and all trump can do is stand there with his tiny mushroom in his tiny hand and rage against the slings and arrows of outrageous fortunes of his own doing! When the age is in, the wit is out. And for Don old, it’s been out for a long time!

    https://www.rawstory.com/time-to-get-off-the-stage-trump-urged-to-step-aside-by-long-time-acquaintance/

  7. This weird shit about what Kamala considers her race to be is just the same weird shit they pulled with Obama. He caught hell checking the box as ‘black’ when his mother was white. As if the people complaining would accept him claiming to be white. Just racist noise.

  8. It really astounds me that in 2024, race is still an issue for voters. This is just something Trump is throwing out there that his base can understand and takes away from the real issues. Kamala was a state prosecutor, State Attorney General for the largest state in the US, US Senator, and Vice President. She one of the most qualified people in the country to be President. The fact that he is dismissing all of that and making this an issue about race is just a distraction from someone who is incapable of actually leading.

  9. For folks who still don’t quite understand how offensive, outrageous, and racist Trump’s remarks were to the black journalists, (ie. the MAGAs), I found this panel discussion to be the best at putting things into perspective. Trump is a racist moron who is incapable of understanding the world around him. I believe they call that psychopathy. Amazingly he revels in his hatred and racism, and his cult eats it up with a spoon! I don’t think his cult can make plausible excuses for his behavior any longer. He is what he’s always been, except now larger. And I don’t think the country is ready to turn our government over to racist buffoons. We’re too diverse to be a christofascist racist country. We’re not Germany. And thank God For our diversity. It is our strength! And allow me to be the first to say it. Madame President Kamala Harris! No going back now. And I’m damn glad to see it!

  10. You and the drive by media are being trolled by Trump. When Kamala ran for DA she was Indian, now she’s black. The low info voters, whose thinks she’s black now are exposed to her flip flop.

Trump is playing chess, the rest are playing checkers.

    • I can tell by your comment that you are worried. In just a few days of campaigning, Harris has overtaken Trump in many polls.
So Trump, feeling the pressure, goes the racist route. An attack on her heritage was out of bounds.
By the way, Trump is not smart enough to play chess. -JmB

      • I don’t think I’ve said that. The only real “we got him now” will be when he’s defeated in November. – JmB

      • Swede is throwing stuff at the wall to see if anything sticks. It’s the new MAGA strategy since they can’t use the Joe is too old strategy any more.

But I must agree with a Swede on one point. The media has done an absolutely horrific job informing the public on who Trump really is. There’s a reason that the people of New York hate Trump, for they know him well. He is exactly like his father was, an horrific racist grifter con man who stiffed everyone in New York he ever did business with! And played footsies with the mob all the while! Don the con is his his old man’s spittin’ image! The only people he fools are the rubes in the outback in places like Montana!

Trump’s old man was so awful that even Woody Guthrie hated him and wrote a song about what an evil bast*rd he was. And I dare anyone to say that Woody wasn’t patriotic!

        Great song.

    • Could you provide a source on that claim about when running for DA? Aside from some doofus on X (formerly Twitter) or Lies Social, that is.

Reuters fact check seems to think different.

      https://www.reuters.com/article/world/fact-check-kamala-harris-did-not-switch-from-identifying-as-indian-american-to-idUSKBN25H1Q9/

And so does this CNN story.

      https://www.cnn.com/2024/07/31/politics/fact-check-debunking-trumps-lie-that-harris-suddenly-embraced-a-black-identity/index.html

      • From the internet:
Trump was white and all of a sudden became an orange person. Someone should look into that.

      • Apparently you are fixated on her race. The number one thing to remember is she is not Trump.

      • I hate to hog up the comment section, but since Swede is crowing about Vance going to the border, I wonder if he could expound on just how ol’ JD is going to conduct his “war” on childless people? Will he design deportation camps for them too? Vance is as mentally ill as trump. And maybe more so. In just a very short time he has become the laughing stock of the world! That is in itself quite an accomplishment!

Regarding one’s race, it’s been said that there still exist remnants of Neanderthal genetics is certain people. I believe it, for Vance very much exhibits those traits! Look closely at the guy and tell me I’m wrong! And then listen to him!

      • Do you read your own blog?

“She was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn’t know she was Black, until a number of years ago, when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black,” Trump said, drawing a smattering of jeers from an audience of about 1,000 people.
“So I don’t know, is she Indian or is she Black? Trump continued. “But you know what, I respect either one, but she obviously doesn’t, because she was Indian all the way, and then all of a sudden she made a turn, and she went – she became a Black person.”

      • I do. You don’t just “turn black.” That was an asinine comment from Trump.

      • Brother, now posters here are promoting as authoritative some claim made by Tubby “the man of 30,000 lies in just 4 years”?

        That’s just sad.

“Asian American/Indian American/Black American, take your pick.”

You do realize she is all of those, right? It’s sort of how genetics works. (Along with labels we find it necessary to hang on anyone who is not white.) And she can and does claim membership in all of those groups?

A mutt descendant of immigrants just like so many people here in Montana who are mixed parts Swedish, or Norwegian, or Scottish, or Yugoslavian, or Native American, or English, or German, or black, or Irish, or what have you.

What’s this idiotic wingnut fascination with Kamala’s heritage? She’s a natural born American citizen. She’s 35 or over. She has lived here for 14 years or more. She has not engaged in an insurrection. That pretty much fulfills the constitutional requirements to run for president. So is it her color that alarms the wingnuts, same as they went bonkers over Obama?

    • No, trumpsky is cheating at chess and checkers. Just as he cheats at pretty much everything. He likes to pretend he’s good at golf – “But above all, the former president’s dubious claims on the course have become legendary and were the subject of a 2019 book by sportswriter Rick Reilly: “Commander in Cheat: How Golf Explains Trump..

“Trump doesn’t just cheat at golf,” Reilly wrote. “He throws it, boots it, and moves it. He lies about his lies. He fudges and foozles and fluffs. At Winged Foot, where Trump is a member, the caddies got so used to seeing him kick his ball back onto the fairway they came up with a nickname for him: ‘Pele.’”
