Happy hump day! Here are the topics for today’s independent commentary:

GREAT FALLS SCHOOL BOARD RESULTS:

The Electric reported early last night that Marlee Sunchild has retained her seat on the Great Falls Public Schools board. According to preliminary results as of 8:15 p.m., the vote counts are:

  • Marlee Sunchild: 5,668
  • Rodney Meyers: 2,568
  • Tony Rosales: 1,755

The total votes cast in the GFPS board election were 10,042.

SPECIAL SESSION?

Some of the wacko Republicans in the state legislature, including Montana House Speaker Matt Regier, are calling for a special session to address immigration and state marijuana tax distribution in a letter sent to the Secretary of State on Tuesday.

This was reported by the Daily Montanan.

The Daily Montanan says the Kalispell Republican’s letter was signed by 12 other Republican lawmakers requesting the legislature reconvene to address the two hot-button issues. The request follows rhetoric from Montana politicians claiming, without evidence, a Flathead nonprofit used “dark money” and connections to the Biden administration to relocate a migrant family who crossed the southern border and journeyed to the Flathead Valley. The organization has said this accusation is false.

Who would have thought a family from Venezuela would cause so much terror and wetting of the pants in the Republican ranks.

I bet many Montanans would rather have them as neighbors instead of someone like Greg Gianforte.

The Daily Montanan also reminds us that this is the second call for a special session this week from separate groups of Republicans. A dozen GOP lawmakers signed onto a request Monday to reconvene and consider legislation that would allow Supreme Court candidates to declare a party affiliation on the ballot. Judicial races in the state are currently nonpartisan.

The Republicans in Montana must be in need of some conservative companionship to help them make it to January.

TIKTOK SUES UNITED STATES:

In case you missed it, the Associated Press (AP) and other sources reported that TikTok and its Chinese parent company filed a lawsuit Tuesday challenging a new American law that would ban the popular video-sharing app in the U.S. unless it’s sold to an approved buyer, saying it unfairly singles out the platform and is an unprecedented attack on free speech.

Good for TikTok.

It was also reported by the AP that in its lawsuit, ByteDance says the new law vaguely paints its ownership of TikTok as a national security threat in order to circumvent the First Amendment, despite no evidence that the company poses a threat. It also says the law is so “obviously unconstitutional” that its sponsors are instead portraying it as a way to regulate TikTok’s ownership.

There is no evidence that TikTok poses a threat. Now our federal government will have to defend the ridiculous law in court and waste millions of taxpayer dollars fighting a losing battle. The officials who voted for this ban are clowns.

STAMP OUT HUNGER:

Reminder – The Stamp Out Hunger food drive is this Saturday (May 11).

Each year, letter carriers across the country head out on their routes on the second Saturday in May to collect donations of non-perishable food items to benefit local food pantries. Since launching in 1993, the National Association of Letter Carriers’ annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has grown into the nation’s largest one-day food drive, helping to fill the shelves of food banks in cities and towns throughout the United States.

To donate, leave your donation of non-perishable food in a bag near your mailbox before your letter carrier delivers mail on the second Saturday in May. The carrier will do the rest. The food is sorted and delivered to an area food bank or pantry, where it is available for needy families.

One in ten Americans face hunger every day in America. This drive is one way you can help those in your own city or town who need help.

TRUMP HUSH MONEY TRIAL:

The Daily Beast has a pretty good review of Tuesday’s hush money trial starring Donald Trump.

The Daily Beast headline, “Stormy’s Testimony: Old Spice, Silk Jammies, and No Condom” was pretty accurate compared to other reports I read.

Trump supposedly told Stormy Daniels during their alleged sex romp that he and his wife sleep in separate rooms. He supposedly told Daniels she reminded him of his daughter, Ivanka. Daniels told jurors she spanked Trump “on the butt” with a rolled-up magazine—with his face on the cover—after he was “rude” and hogged their hotel room conversation.

This is exactly the type of guy we need as President – NOT!

  1. Before the freedom caucus starts rounding up immigrants, they might want to consult with their constituents down In Bozeman. Once again the Regiers and their merry band of freedom kookus freaks want to prevent out of country immigrants from moving here who actually contribute to society. Interesting to note that many of these freedom kookus freaks are outta state immigrant transplants themselves! I’m all for designing a strategy to prevent any more of these wacko MAGAs from immigrating to Montana! Now that’s a special session I could support! No more Giantforte’s, no more Daines’s, no more Rosendales, and no more Shehees! No more MAGAs, Trumpers, fascist Bible thumpers!

  2. The election results give me hope. Even by running two oddballs, the MAGAs were unable to split the vote enough for a win. Hopefully that trend will continue.

But I worry about the House seat. The Republicans have a whole slate of candidates running, and Miss Kitty Litter Elsie has a huge war chest and name recognition. Not good. Hence, there’s an excellent chance she could be the Republican nominee by default. If that’s the case, we could end up with the stupidest member of the House ever representing Montana.

Oh sure, it would be hilarious watching her being interviewed by the national press, and she doing her best litter box Kristi Noem impression. But it would solidify Montana’s reputation as a state whose barrel of mentally delayed politicians has no bottom! Denny’s looking better all the time, and I assume he knows there are no litter boxes in our schools! ‘Sides, bout time to send a guy to D.C. who has real cow sh*t on his boots!

    • The school board election results were another resounding defeat for the local far right book-banning, favored-religion-pushing, gay-hating, etc. extremists.

Their favored guy Rodney went down in flames to his third loss for this office, not even close. In fact the 2,568 votes he received this time were fewer than the last two times he was rejected, 3,620 in 2023 and 3,904 in 2022. Note any pattern there?

This fail follows closely on the extremists’ epic fail in collecting anywhere near enough signatures to overturn the sidelining of their little cabal as embodied in the ousting of Sandra Merchant.

Temporarily gives one faith that Great Falls voters haven’t totally gone around the extremist bend.

      • Great background info. The election results were actually released pretty quickly. -JmB
