The Monday Memo

Welcome! Here are the topics for today’s commentary:

  • Tim Sheehy Lied
  • 40TH Lawsuit
  • Reminder- Solar Eclipse

TIM SHEEHY LIED:

There have been several twists and turns in Montana politics over the years, but probably nothing close to what the Washington Post (WaPo) reported on Saturday about Republican U.S. Senate candidate Tim Sheehy.

Sheehy has apparently told two stories about a gunshot wound to his arm. One is that he received it in Afghanistan. The other story, as reported in WaPo:

After a family visit to Montana’s Glacier National Park, he told a National Park Service ranger that he accidentally shot himself in the right arm that day after his Colt .45 revolver fell and discharged while he was loading his vehicle in the park, according to a record of the episode filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Montana.

The WaPo report continues with:

Asked this week about the citation, which has not been previously reported, Sheehy told the Washington Post that the statement he gave the ranger was a lie. He said he made up the story about the gun going off to protect himself and his former platoonmates from facing a potential military investigation into an old bullet wound that he said he got in Afghanistan in 2012. He said he did not know for certain whether the wound was the result of friendly fire or from enemy ammunition, and said he never reported the incident to his superiors.

Sheehy paid a “$525 fine for illegally discharging his weapon in the national park.”

The WaPo has been digging into many claims made by Sheehy:

Sheehy’s latest account of his arm wound is one of several differing descriptions he has given of being shot while deployed. In his 2023 memoir “Mudslingers,” he wrote in one passage that he received multiple bullet wounds in Afghanistan. In another, he wrote that his body was hit by a bullet just once. In the book, he also offers varying accounts of how he was shot.

When this story broke, I received several emails about it from people – most of whom are or were Republicans before Trump came along. The moderates who are left in Montana don’t seem to like Sheehy. Now they have several more reasons.

These are not the actions one would expect from a Naval Officer and Navy SEAL. These are not the actions Montanans would expect from a U.S. Senator. To say the least, it’s dishonorable.

I expect there are more negative things about Sheehy that we’ll hear about in the next few months. For the sake of Montana, Sheehy should drop out of the U.S. Senate race this week. It would be the honorable thing to do.

The Spokesman-Review published the WaPo story HERE.

40TH LAWSUIT:

According to a press release from the Montana Department of Justice, Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen, along with ten other attorneys general, filed a lawsuit Thursday against the Biden administration’s unconstitutional student loan forgiveness scheme. The lawsuit is the 40th that Attorney General Knudsen has filed against the Biden administration.

I’m not sure that he has won any of the 40 lawsuits, but one thing for sure is that he has wasted thousands of taxpayer dollars to file these lawsuits.

REMINDER- SOLAR ECLIPSE:

The solar eclipse is today (Monday). According to MTN News:

Here in Montana, the northwest corner of the state will only see about a quarter of the sun eclipsed. Southeast Montana will have approximately half of the sun’s disk blocked by the moon.
The eclipse will begin at approximately 11:40 a.m. in Montana, with maximum at 12:48 p.m., and ending just before 2 p.m.

  1. Sheey’s tale of the mystery wound makes no sense for many reasons. It’s painfully obvious that he is either not being forthright about how it occurred, or he really is unqualified for the senate because of his diminished mental abilities incurred from his traumatic brain injury which forces him not to remember events. (As reported by one of his men under his command.) In any case, he needs to drop out. He’s unqualified.

If the MAGAs can run off a good man like John Walsh for failing to attribute some passages in his thesis (which we all did, usually by accident), then they should dump this guy immediately. We don’t need any more dissemblers in Washington.

    • I am amazed about the MAGA hardliners defending Sheehy. No matter how you spin it, he lied. He said he lied. It’s dishonorable. Montanans have to be wondering what’s next. -JmB

    • John Walsh getting run off was back in the days when the Republicans styled themselves at the party of “character matters”. Decades and decades ago. Well maybe two.

Remember they used to holler that phrase regularly, and have honorable men as nominees, like Bob Dole, or Mitt Romney, way back then in the mists of time?

But since the advent of the orange guy they have totally transformed themselves into the party of “character is an impediment”. And Lyin’ Timmy, the “pro-Trump conservative”, is just fitting right in. Kinda putting a stink on the honor of Navy Seals, though.

  2. yep. Sheehy should drop out. I’ll need to look up who else will be on the primary ballot. I don’t have glasses to view the eclipse. Wondering what would happen if I took a very quick glance upward.

    • Brad Johnson is running and one other Republican I think.
You can use a piece of paper, punch hole in it bc and let the sun shine through the hole onto the other paper to see it. Don’t you dare look directly at it! Thanks, JmB

  3. Knudsen’s claims of massive damage to Montana’s economy and tax revenues from the cancellation of Federal student loans for students who live mostly in other states seem pretty bogus.

But apparently since the Montana Supreme Court told him to sit down and shut up with his interference scheme of the abortion initiative, he’s gotta do something else to keep his name in the news.

    • Exactly. Election season is in full swing! Lawsuits are his bread and butter for reelection. Thanks, JmB
