Welcome to March! Here are the topics for today’s column:
- Daines – GOP Senate Leader
- Daines – House Speaker
- Montana Abortion Bills
- Potpourri
- One More Thing
DAINES – GOP SENATE LEADER:
Axios is reporting that former President Trump quietly has been urging Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.) to run for GOP Senate leader — and was doing so even before Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced he was stepping aside as leader, two sources familiar with the situation tell Axios.
My pick for GOP Senate leader is U.S. Senator John Thune of South Dakota. Thune is a statesman and won’t roll over if Trump pressures him.
Daines is a “Yes” man that Trump needs if he becomes President. I think Dianes would bend and violate the Constitution to please Trump. Daines does not have a spine.
DAINES – HOUSE SPEAKER:
The reporters at NonStop Local (ABC/Fox) were quick to get a quote from U.S. Senator Steve Daines about Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell stepping down.
But they seemed confused about in which legislative body Daines serves. The headline, which has now been changed said, “Senator Steve Daines Comments on his potential to be the next House Speaker.”
Here at The Western Word, I take screenshots all the time, so you can see the headline HERE.
I think it is more important than ever for our children to pay attention during American Government classes…
MONTANA ABORTION BILLS:
MTN News is reporting that a state district judge has issued a ruling, permanently blocking three laws from the 2021 legislative session that tightened abortion restrictions. Judge Kurt Krueger, a Butte-Silver Bow judge handling a case in Yellowstone County, granted summary judgment Thursday and put a permanent injunction on the laws. In his decision, he said they were incompatible with the Montana Constitution.
MTN says the three bills are:
- House Bill 136, which would have banned abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, except when necessary to prevent serious health risk to the mother.
- House Bill 140, which would have required abortion providers to ask patients if they wanted to see an ultrasound of the fetus or listen to its heartbeat.
- House Bill 171, which would have put additional restrictions on medication abortion, including requiring patients to make two in-person visits to a provider.
I am happy to see these bills struck down. I am sure the Montana Department of Justice will appeal. I personally hope that we see fewer abortions in the USA, but the abortion decision should be made by the woman with advice from her healthcare provider.

Did you see the news that the library haters’ lawsuit over the levy got tossed?
Apparently they sought zero qualified legal input to help them prepare their suit and instead relied on their own vast knowledge of the law, no doubt submitting endless reams of citations of MCA as that little clicque of extremists is wont to do. The only problem was, as the judge wrote, “every one of their legal arguments is wrong”. LOL! And so much more deliciousness. It was quite a smackdown.
And this group of people that apparently never got near a law text wants to control what everyone else is allowed to read and learn from the library.

thanks
link worked for me.
I voted No on the library levy. I’m not a library hater anymore than those who voted No on the public safety levy are police haters.
I do actually think some of the folks in GF are library haters. Thanks for your comments. -JmB
I did not mean to lump everyone who voted against the library levy into the same bucket. At least one of the people who filed this lawsuit was a very vocal member of that “Liberty and Values MT” library haters group. That was the reference.
That’s why our court system is way behind. Merica!
And one reason the entities that must respond to such frivolous lawsuits are short of money.
I can’t get your link to work. -JmB
