The Monday Memo

It’s the last day of July and here are the topics for today’s column:

  • U.S. Senate Montana 2024
  • Keep Your Money
  • Set Your Alarm
  • Did You Know?

U.S. SENATE MONTANA 2024:

The Sheehy for U.S. Senate campaign launched their first campaign advertisement recently. Here is how Politico reported it:

Former Navy SEAL Tim Sheehy is on a mission to boost his statewide profile ahead of next year’s marquee Senate race in Montana.
The details: Sheehy, a Republican who launched a campaign against Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) in June and was endorsed by the Senate GOP campaign arm, is going on air with a $200,000 broadcast, cable, satellite and digital ad buy to introduce himself to voters.
A 30-second and minute-long version of the spot will run starting Friday for two weeks across the state’s major media markets. In the ad, Sheehy describes how the Sept. 11 attacks motivated him to join the Navy and talks about the aerial firefighting company he founded in Montana after he left the military.

We are about 10 months out from the Montana primary (June 4, 2024) and 15 months from the General Election (Nov. 5, 2024).

The Sheehy campaign has had a rocky start, and some believe this ad buy is an attempt to keep other well-known Republicans, like Matt Rosendale, from entering the race. The Sheehy campaign needs to see some positive movement in the polls with this ad buy.

The campaign ad is a very good “get to know” the candidate ad. Sheehy appears to be the all-American candidate. Sheehy said his campaign is about “Service. God. Country.” Some Christians might take issue with “service” coming first as many believe that God comes first, then family.

You can watch the one-minute version of the campaign advertisement HERE.

When Sheehy fails to beat Tester, I hope he considers taking on Steve Daines…

KEEP YOUR MONEY:

Great Falls City Commissioner Rick Tryon is running for reelection this November. A faithful reader alerted me that Tryon posted a campaign message to his followers.

The message, in part, says:

I do my best to listen to the silent majority, even when the angry minority is yelling their loudest.
I won’t always agree with you, but I’ll always listen and consider your point of view and do what’s right for Great Falls.
I’m not looking for a fight – but I’m not running from any either.
I’m not accepting campaign contributions. Keep your money.
If you want to help, SHARE THIS POST.

The commissioner won’t have to worry about any contributions from me, or my vote. He has voted to raise taxes and fees and that’s enough for me to look for a new person for the commission. I did actually vote for Tryon years ago.

You can view his campaign post HERE.

SET YOUR ALARM:

The U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) plays early (VERY EARLY) Tuesday morning in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The match starts at 1:00 am (Yes, AM) Tuesday morning against Portugal.

According to Fox Sports:

After beating Vietnam, 3-0, and drawing with the Netherlands, 1-1, the U.S. can advance simply with a draw, but hopes to win Group E by defeating Portugal, though it might come down to goal differential.
If both the U.S. and the Netherlands win Tuesday (the teams have matches at the exact same time), then goal differential will come into play as the first tiebreaker. The U.S. currently holds a +2 advantage. Here’s more on the scenarios for the U.S. to win its group.
Portugal, meanwhile, lost a tight opener to the Netherlands, 1-0, before notching its first-ever goal in the Women’s World Cup en route to a 2-0 elimination of Vietnam on Thursday (its first win, of course). The U.S. is expected to beat Portugal, but it likely won’t be as easy as the team’s first game against Vietnam.

The match will be broadcast on Fox.

Go USA!!

DID YOU KNOW?

This Thursday is the NFL Hall of Fame game between the Jets and the Browns. With the Hall of Fame game this week that means football is back and there will be football until the cows come home!

Is this a great country or what?

  1. Tryon:

“I do my best to listen to the silent majority, even when the angry minority is yelling their loudest.”

That concern for the majority must be why he sided with the loud angry yelling losing minority over the library board reappointment.

  2. The city only has about 3000 more people in it since 50 years ago. We actually have lost a few since the last census, somebody explain to me why we need a sh*t load more police and firemen.

    • Yes but, Bill, do you have a hundred foot high house? Seems that with all these new motels around town, we’ve gotta protect them. Sure, we’ve gotta foot the bill. But what the heck. We don’t mind. Or do we? Ya gotta kinda wonder when all this new development is going to start enlarging the tax base to lower our taxes and pay for itself. It ain’t. So we essentially get to subsidize all this progress.

Ricky has a job, and let’s face it. What is the guy really qualified to do? So, think of your tax increase not as a safety levy, but as your Christian duty to keep a guy like Rick from being homeless on the street! We’ll get our tax relief in heaven!
