Happy Monday – The following topics caught my attention for today’s commentary:
- Try That in a Small Town
- Five Spiritual Entities
- Georgia Lowe’s Employees
- One More Thing
TRY THAT IN A SMALL TOWN:
You’ve probably heard about the song and video from country singer Jason Aldean. It’s called “Try that in a Small Town” and it has some people upset and others praising it. The song was released earlier this year and the video was just released a few days ago.
I grew up in the ultimate small town, Mill Grove, Missouri. I think about 25 people were living there when I was a kid.
I checked out the video and the lyrics to the song. The phrase “Try that in a Small Town” is repeated about 10 times in the song which has about 260 words total. Check out the lyrics HERE.
USA Today reports that Country Music Television (CMT) pulled the video from rotation because “many perceived as being in favor of gun violence and lynching.” They also reported that viewers noted that scenes in the video were shot at the Maury County Courthouse in Columbia, Tennessee, where a Black man named Henry Choate, 18, was lynched in 1927. The site is also where the infamous Columbia Race Riot occurred in 1946.
Great Falls City Commissioner Rick Tryon had this to say on Facebook about Aldean:
I’m old school when it comes to country music – Hank Sr., Merle, Buck Owens, George & Tammy, Johnny Cash etc.
Everything after the Outlaw era masquerading as “country music” has mostly been a bunch of bubblegum pop schlock with a steel guitar or fiddle riff thrown in to try to fool the gullible.
But I gotta tell ya, this Jason Aldean kid gained a new fan this week.
Tryon is running for reelection this November.
The song won’t be on my country playlist where I have George Strait, Chicks, Toby Keith, Brooks and Dunn, Waylon, Willie, Church, McGraw, and about 50 others on the rotation. Before you judge, I have over 100 songs on my classic rock playlist. Aldean’s song will probably be a hit because the MAGA folks will play it over and over – it may end up being their anthem. I suspect Donald Trump will use it for his campaign.
You can watch the video HERE.
FIVE SPIRITUAL ENTITIES:
Gallup reported last week about a new poll that found that the percentages of Americans who believe in each of five religious entities — God, angels, heaven, hell and the devil — have edged downward by three to five percentage points since 2016. Still, majorities believe in each, ranging from a high of 74% believing in God to lows of 59% for hell and 58% for the devil. About two-thirds each believe in angels (69%) and heaven (67%).
So, God leads the devil 74% to 58%. Go, God!
Maybe our beliefs edging downward is part of the problem.
There are several interesting things in the Gallup report. Check it out HERE.
GEORGIA LOWE’S EMPLOYEE:
Sometimes I read stories like the one about Lowes employee Donna Hansbrough, 68, and shake my head.
The New York Post reports a Georgia Lowe’s employee attempted to stop shoplifters making off with $2,100 amount of merchandise, leaving her unemployed and with a black eye. Donna Hansbrough, 68, saw three people loading up a shopping cart at a store in Rincon, about 30 minutes north of Savannah, and then leave without stopping to pay, police said.
It was also reported by the Post that Hansbrough was then canned from her job of 13 years for violating company policy by interfering with the crooks, according to a report.
That seems a little harsh for Lowes to fire her after 13 years.
Check out the report from the Post HERE.
ONE MORE THING:
Regarding the song “Try that in a Small Town” Tristan Snell (@TristanSnell) tweeted:
Uvalde is a small town.
Edmond is a small town.
Blacksburg is a small town.
Sandy Hook is a small town.
Sutherland Springs is a small town.
And in those towns, real bad guys showed up, and no good guys magically took them down.

Now that’s just funny. Seems that Alden is going to protect us from rioters in Germany! And elsewhere. Them good old boys do get around!

Jason Aldean has a sponsorship deal with Coors Light.
So, just like the trans haters have boycotted Bud Light for its promotional deal with the trans influencer, now all haters of thinly veiled racism should boycott Coors Light.
At which point the two crappiest beers in America would both be the subject of mass boycotts – as they should have been long ago.
Although subtle, the message and imagery of the song comes throughout loud and clear. Spit on a cop, you’re bad. You’re BLM, or maybe Antifa. Bear spray a cop, hit them with a fire extinguisher, crush their head in a door, and throw them down stairs, you’re a patriot. You’re a MAGA who loves the country! Of course none of those things are mentioned in the song. Hard to work into the lyrics “try crushing a cop head in a door in our small town and see what happens!”
The stereotyping is juvenile. MAGAs don’t rob liquor stores, punch old ladies, car Jack. Black folks do. Only people who hate Trump and America burn flags. Magas just try to hang our country’s leaders! See the difference? Protest real injustice, bad. Overthrow a legitimate government based on a lie? Good protest. God approved! You’re a patriot who shares our values.
The song is a pathetic attempt at pandering to the lowest intellects in the country. Judging from the various comments, it appears to be working. No wonder Ric loves it. Jesse will probably have his deputies play it in the classrooms when they’re teaching the kids about the constitution. But it’s so poorly written that seriously doubt it will stand the test of time. Soon you’ll be able to buy it at the bargain bin at Safeway!

The devil is between your ears. God is between your ears. You can either agree or disagree. You do not have a choice and never did. Thanks, mom and dad. Good blog valuable info and rewarding comments. Thanks for the good work you do.
Thank you.
“PITY THE NATION”
Lawrence Ferlinghetti (After Khalil Gibran) 2007
Pity the nation whose people are sheep
And whose shepherds mislead them
Pity the nation whose leaders are liars
Whose sages are silenced
And whose bigots haunt the airwaves
Pity the nation that raises not its voice
Except to praise conquerors
And acclaim the bully as hero
And aims to rule the world
By force and by torture
Pity the nation that knows
No other language but its own
And no other culture but its own
Pity the nation whose breath is money
And sleeps the sleep of the too well fed
Pity the nation oh pity the people
who allow their rights to erode
and their freedoms to be washed away
My country, tears of thee
Sweet land of liberty!

I find it difficult to reconcile the number of people who believe in God with the number of people who spew hatred at their fellow man.
It’s sad, but many so-called Christians don’t walk the walk. There’s just too much hate. -JmB
Maybe Rick will do a cover song, maybe he will buy some new strings and learn how to tune his guitar. Old school from the lower south side style.
One can only hope. 😂 -JmB
The denizens of small towns are too busy pursuing and dealing with their opioid addictions to find time for all those other activities.
Truth!
