Good morning. It’s Thursday, July 13, and here are the topics I am providing commentary about today:
- State Income Tax Rebates
- U.S. Senate Montana 2024
- U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville
STATE INCOME TAX REBATES:
Several sources, including MTN News, are reporting that the Montana Department of Revenue says it processed about 190,000 state income tax rebates during the first week of July.
I am happy to report that I received my rebate a few days ago. It was just in time for Amazon Prime Days!
You can find out about your Montana Tax Rebates by clicking HERE.
Is this a great country or what?
U.S. SENATE MONTANA 2024:
It has not been a good week for Tim Sheehy, who is running as a Republican for U.S. Senate in Montana.
Here are a few headlines:
- Montana GOP Senate candidate’s old Facebook includes lewd photos of women, racist costumes, and homoerotic jokes (Source)
- Montana Republican Senate candidate criticized for racist Facebook posts (Source)
- GOP’s golden-boy recruit busted for frat-boy misogyny in Facebook posts (Source)
- GOP Senate candidate uses Kentucky photo to tout his support for Montana agriculture — then quickly replaces it when asked about it (Source)
Some are saying his youthful indiscretions can be overlooked. Maybe so, but I think Sheehy and his campaign team have screwed up the most important part of the campaign – his introduction to the voters.
U.S. SENATOR TOMMY TUBERVILLE:
CBS News and other sources are reporting that Republican U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama has placed a hold on general and flag officer nominations to protest the Defense Department’s policy that covers certain abortion-related travel expenses for service members based in states with restrictive reproductive healthcare laws. Tuberville is exercising the hold until the Pentagon changes the policy or it is passed through legislation.
Tuberville has the right to do this due to his position as a U.S. Senator, but that does not make it proper.
CBS News reports that because of Tuberville’s hold, the Marine Corps is operating without a Senate-confirmed commandant for the first time in 164 years.

Tuberville has had several issues since becoming a U.S. Senator. His remarks about “White Nationalists” is one that he is trying to overcome. Read the ABC News report HERE.

Speaking of taxes…

The property tax seminars of the past few days have also exposed those same legislators (and other state elected officials) as bald-faced liars, the ones loudly proclaiming it is the local governments who are raising your taxes, not them. Because the DOR seminars have made clear there’s a 101 or 102.5 mills STATE component of your taxes for schools, and it is not subject to the 1/2 of rate of inflation restriction. In other words, the state component of your property taxes will be going up the full 33% or whatever you saw.
Those legislators saw fit to leave the tax rate at 1.35% instead of lowering it one iota. They knew full well that the effect would be to raise considerably more overall State revenue off property owners, which is real convenient when a primary goal of the session was to pursue the GOP’s usual agenda of pushing the burden for government finances ever further down the economic ladder, in this case by lowering the income tax rate for the state’s highest earners and richest people. All while throwing dust in our eyes with the drag queen etc. nonsense that grabbed the headlines.
Granted, it’s a small component of your overall bill, but still thank goodness for honest deep state civil servants educating the public to expose the bald-faced lies of elected state officials.
I neglected to add: The State component of your property taxes is supposedly currently 17.79%, though on my 2022 bill it seems closer to just 17%. That amount is what will be increasing by the full value of your assessment increase. In my case that’s well over $100 due to the State alone. This is what they’re lying about.
