The Wednesday Read

Quote for the Day…

People say I’m condescending. (That means I talk down to people.) – Unknown

Today’s independent commentary deals with these people/issues:

  • Jason Ellsworth
  • Marjorie Taylor Greene
  • The Western Word Poll
  • Reading Assignments

JASON ELLSWORTH:

On Tuesday, the Montana Free Press (MTFP) reported that Montana Senate President Pro Tempore Jason Ellsworth, R-Hamilton, has been charged with three misdemeanors, including obstruction of a peace officer, after he was pulled over for speeding in a construction zone in May. The officer reported a verbal altercation with Ellsworth in which the senator claimed he was exempt from arrest because he was a lawmaker traveling for legislative business.

The MTFP reported that the 67th Legislature adjourned April 29, roughly a month before Ellsworth was pulled over.

During the stop, MTFP reported that Ellsworth threatened to call the Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen, a fellow Republican, and report the officer.

So much for “Backing the Blue,” huh?

Ellsworth and many members of the Montana Legislature feel that they are “bigshots.” I don’t have much respect for many of them. For about 90 days every two years, they have some power to mess with our lives and that’s it. After that, they are just another John or Jane Doe – and they must obey the laws like the rest of us.

It is my hope that Broadwater County Attorney Cory Swanson goes for the maximum punishment. I hope Swanson sends a message that here in Montana we don’t care for legislators who break the law and then try to get out of it via their elected position.

The Republican leaders in the Montana State Senate should strip Ellsworth of his leadership position as well as his committee assignments.

MARJORIE TAYLOR GREENE:

The Associated Press (AP) reported that U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) blasted social media companies over her temporary suspension from Twitter on Tuesday, calling it “a Communist-style attack on free speech.” Twitter imposed the 12-hour timeout on Monday, saying some of her tweets violated its policy against spreading misinformation that could cause harm during the coronavirus pandemic.

The quote from Greene, “a Communist-style attack on free speech” is absurd.

I call out fake news on my personal and The Western Word Facebook account. The good news is that my work is paying off – many of the dumbasses posting fake news have unfriended me.

They, like Greene, can’t handle the truth.

THE WESTERN WORD POLL:

The Associated Press (AP) announced last week that a third Democrat had announced a run for Montana’s new U.S. House seat. Those Democrats running include Monica Tranel, Laurie Bishop, and Cora Neumann.

This week’s poll question asks, “Who is your favorite Democratic U.S. House candidate so far?”

The results will be posted Thursday.

  1. So glad that our constitutionalist sheriff Slaughter took the time to go to Helena and testify in favor of the bill allowing guns on college campuses, because, well, what could go wrong with guns on campus, right? Btw, we’ve had a number of shootings in bars already. Great idea guns in bars. Nuthin’ mixes like alcohol and guns. It’s our Montana heritage, our culture. Sheesh. What a buffoon with a badge. Problem is he gets to hire like minded deputies. He can fill his entire department with little constitutionalist underlings.

  2. It appears Stone-Manning will be confirmed by a 51-50 vote with V.P. Harris casting the needed vote to push Tracy over the line. With the approval of king maker Manchin Tracy gets through even though the GOP threw everything in their playbook at Stone-Manning they could muster. I am not very impressed when I hear the same Senators calling Tracy a liar when they continue to back a man that told according to Washington Post 30,573 false or misleading claims in 4 years as president. Stone-Manning wouldn’t have been my first choice but I feel any President should be able to choose their own cabinet or sub cabinet holders.
