The Monday Memo

We don’t see things as they are; we see them as we are. ― Anaïs Nin

Today’s independent commentary deals with these people/issues:

  • Election Day
  • Ultimate Fighting Championship
  • Last Monday

ELECTION DAY:

Tuesday (Nov. 5) is Election Day 2019 across the fruited plains!

Don’t forget to vote. In Montana, it’s called the “Municipal General Election” and in Great Falls we will be electing a mayor, two city commissioners, municipal judge, and neighborhood council members.

Psst – This is not the election where we vote for President!

ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP:

CNN and several others reported that President Donald Trump was met with loud, sustained boos and some cheers as he entered Madison Square Garden for the Ultimate Fighting Championship on Saturday night in New York.

Just days earlier, Trump received the same greetings from the crowd in Washington at World Series game five.

All that and a new poll from NBC and the Wall Street Journal reported over the weekend that 49 percent now back Trump’s impeachment and removal. Ouch.

A new Fox News national poll of likely voters shows that Joe Biden would beat Donald Trump 51% to 39%. The poll also showed Trump with a 57% job disapproval rating.

It’s not been a very good week for President Trump.

LAST MONDAY:

When I wrote about Trump announcing the killing of Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi last Monday, I said the following:

The problem I have with all this is our President is a liar. I finally gave up on believing him. Some of what he said in his statement may or may not be true. We’ll probably find out down the road.

My comments seem to be coming true. The New York Times is reporting:

It was a vivid scene worthy of the ending of a Hollywood thriller, the image of a ruthless terrorist mastermind finally brought to justice “whimpering and crying and screaming all the way” to his death. But it may be no more true than a movie script.
In the days since President Donald Trump gave the world a graphic account of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s last minutes, no evidence has emerged to confirm it. The secretary of defense, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the regional commander who oversaw the operation that killed the leader of the Islamic State all say they have no idea what the president was talking about.

The Times also added, “Four other Defense Department officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to share details of the raid, said they had seen no after-action reports, situation reports or other communications that support Trump’s claim.”

This has been one of the fundamental problems I have with the 45th President of the United States. He is a liar. I don’t mean a few white lies; President Trump is a serial liar. I can’t trust anything that he says to be true.

  1. I agree our current president is a liar by pathology and has disqualified himself from elective office
(any elective office) . I am, first and foremost, worried that president Trump might do something that will get many young Americans needlessly killed. Now if I can get you to realize the same seriousness about C.T.E. (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) and its effect on youth, you will become a champion of reason and logic in areas that interfere with your emotions.
Oh, by the way, it does not get any easier with age but reason and logic, facts and evidence, falsely seem less-important.
