Caught My Eye…

I always knew I’d get old. How fast it happened was a bit of a surprise, though. -Unknown

Welcome to the big column to end the week “Caught My Eye” (CME)!

If you are a first-time visitor, welcome! CME is the once a week column that is posted here every Friday morning. This is when I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week. There may be some sarcasm and pointed commentary so be warned!

Here are the topics that “Caught My Eye” this week:

  • Corey, Corey, Corey
  • Montana Green Party
  • That Damned Wall
  • NFL Playoffs
  • One More Thing

Corey, Corey, Corey:

I’ve been in and around politics for the past 25 years or so. If I were advising Secretary of State Corey Stapleton I would tell him to withdraw from the Montana Governor’s race and try to retain his seat as Secretary of State. He has a better chance to keep that seat.

Montana Democrats filed a campaign complaint with the Commissioner of Political Practices (COPP) alleging that Stapleton violated Montana law when he announced his 2020 gubernatorial campaign using a state email address. They also contend that Stapleton used state letterhead with the Montana state seal to announce his candidacy for governor. I thought everyone knew that was a no-no.

There are several other screw-ups by Stapleton, many which are publicized in the complaint. You can read the complaint HERE.

I think the Montana Democrats have a good complaint. We’ll see how it plays out with the COPP. The current COPP was a Democrat legislator. That’s how we roll in Montana.

Fight On, Montana Green Party:

The Montana Republicans and Democrats have made the laws so tough for non-Republicans and non-Democrats to run for office in Montana that they should consider the power they have over elections in Montana a monopoly.

We very seldom see independent candidates on the ballot. The Montana Green Party found out last election that the requirements for even a minor political party, like them, to get on the ballot in Montana are overly burdensome. So they filed suit. The Montana Secretary of State Corey Stapleton wanted the suit thrown out, but the Associated Press reported this week that it will go to trial in December.

That’s great news. During this session, the Montana Legislature could change the laws and make all people, no matter what political party they belong to (or if they belong to no party), equal when filing the paperwork to run for elective office.

If they did this we might get better people running for office, plus those elected might work together more.

That Damned Wall:

Who is paying for that damned wall? Mexico? Montana? Taxpayers?

Candidate and President Donald Trump has said over and over that Mexico was paying for it. PolitiFact has a fact check up on its website with the headline, “Trump says he didn’t say Mexico would write US a check for border wall. But he did.”

Check it out HERE. Trump keeps PolitiFact busy.

U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is urging the President to use emergency powers to pay for the wall. I think Trump will. Other Presidents have used “emergency powers” so this is nothing new. CBS News has a great piece up on their website that explains the use of emergency powers. I think the bottom line is if the President decides to use emergency powers, it will be challenged in court.

Some people have also commented that in the future a President from the Democratic Party using emergency powers in regard to mass shootings and guns. That would be fun to watch.

The wall is dividing the country.

NFL Playoffs:

It’s the divisional round of the NFL playoffs this weekend. There are two games on Saturday and two games on Sunday. Since my Kansas City Chiefs are in the playoffs I am as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.

Here are my picks:

  • Chiefs over the Colts
  • Rams over the Cowboys
  • Patriots over Chargers
  • Saints over the Eagles

The only pick I feel really good about is the Saints over the Eagles.

One More Thing:

I’m at that delusional age where I think everyone my age looks way older than I do. – Unknown

  1. All that has been done is replacing old fencing with better fencing. The replacement project in Calexico, CA has been planned since 2009, the LA Times says. Trump’s administration has started referring to this as part of his wall. But it’s not new territory being protected. pic.twitter.com/JBto71OhO4— Daniel Dale (@ddale8) January 11, 2019

Local law enforcement authorities around McAllen TX do not share trump’s histrionic assessment of the situation on the border. Same in El Paso and all points in between.

A wall will not stop the flow of narcotics, the majority of it comes in thru ports of entry, that the semis drive thru to enter the country. More and better technology is the answer.

  2. I like your NFL picks with the exception of New England. I think (hope) that Rivers continues his march. After all, they’ve played, in effect, 17 road games this season.
