Thursday Numbers

If you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you don’t have integrity, nothing else matters. – Alan K. Simpson

Welcome to “Thursday Numbers!” In case you’re a first-time visitor, this is the weekly column where I take a look at the numbers that are in the news (in descending order) and provide commentary sometimes sprinkled with sarcasm.

This week’s topics include national debt, unemployment, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, the Mariana snailfish, golf carts, area code, Tiger Woods, Eli Manning, Donald Trump, College Football Playoffs, Jeannette Rankin, LeBron James, and much more!

That’s the U.S. National debt as of this morning ($20 trillion).(Debt Clock)

That’s how many people filed new claims for unemployment last week. (USDOL)

The Helena Independent Record reported that Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks settled with the former administrator of Montana State Parks, Chas Van Genderen, for $137,500 and agreed to purge certain disciplinary matters from his employee file, newly released documents say.

Good work by the Helena IR. That’s OUR money. There’s something smelly about the whole thing. Thankfully journalists and bloggers are on the job exposing crap like this.

Researchers have captured video footage of Mariana snailfish swimming at depths of 26,716 feet. (

Mark my word, one of these days this information will come in handy…

The Secret Service spent $7,500 on golf carts while President Trump was in at his private golf club Mar-a-Lago for Thanksgiving. (USA Today)

Those rental fees will kill you…

It was announced that Montana will have area code 406 exclusively for at least 14 more years. (GF Tribune)

Seems like that was exciting news for many. As for me, not so much.

The New York Football Giants have benched starting quarterback Eli Manning. Manning had started 210 regular season games — 222 including the playoffs. (SB Nation)

I think the Broncos will go after Eli Manning…

Tiger Woods is 41 years old and today he returns to the course for the first time in 10 months. (USA Today)

Golf is better with Tiger Woods.

Here is a list of the 16 women who have accused Donald Trump of sexual misconduct. (NYMag)

It only took one accuser for some people to lose their job.

The top four teams in the College Football Playoffs are Clemson (11-1), Auburn (10-2), Oklahoma (11-1), and Wisconsin (12-0). (ESPN)

There’s one week left. All four have tough games. Number five Alabama (11-1) waits for one of the four to stumble to get a spot in the playoffs once again.

The final four will be announced Sunday.

That’s how many elementary schools will be named after Montana native Jeannette Rankin, who was the first woman elected to Congress. The two schools are currently under construction in Kalispell and Missoula. (AP)

I am surprised they are the first.

During the debates, I wonder if any school board members got pissed and quit

Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James was ejected for the first time in his 15-year career during Tuesday night’s 108-97 win over the Miami Heat. (ESPN)

NBA players are such whiny babies these days…
