Duplication

There’s nothing much better than waiting for a report from the Federal government. OK, almost anything is better, but I am trying to lure readers to this website…

The Government Accounting Office (GAO) is set to release a report today that details some of the Federal Government programs that overlap.

For those who don’t know much about the GAO, here is their “About GAO” statement:

The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) is an independent, nonpartisan agency that works for Congress. Often called the “congressional watchdog,” GAO investigates how the federal government spends taxpayer dollars.

It does not appear they have been doing a very good job…maybe they can do away with the GAO?

The report has already been released to members of Congress, so we have to hear their commentary about it first and it’s been leaked to several news organizations. Now that the GAO has their “filters” in place, the rest of us will be allowed to review the report.

According to the Washington Post, the GAO said in a statement, “Reducing or eliminating duplication, overlap, or fragmentation could potentially save billions of taxpayer dollars annually and help agencies provide more efficient and effective services.”

The Tea Party is probably pushing for elimination of the whole Federal government…

According to Politico, Oklahoma Republican Senator Tom Coburn said the report will make “all of us look like jackasses.”  Note to the Senator:  That won’t be a stretch…

No matter what the GAO says, it will be up to those in Congress and the White House to make the cuts. That’s something that is easier said than done. I personally know of at least 10 sub-agencies in the Federal Government that could be eliminated.

In the days following the release of the GAO report, I’ll take a look at it and offer my opinion and commentary.
