Did you feel that touch of spring in the air earlier this week? With a couple of days of 50 degree temperatures, it gives me hope that spring is not too far away.
Sadly, reality came crashing down on me when it snowed about six inches and the temperature dropped to around zero.
No matter what the temperature, you can always count on my weekly column “Caught My Eye” hitting the web on Friday mornings. This column is where I briefly take a look at some of the stories that caught my eye this week that I did not have time to comment about. Sometimes I add just a little sarcasm to spice up the story.
This week I take a look at what hit my inbox from the political world, I talk about deliveries by a mail carrier, Max’s travels, an anniversary and much much more.
So grab your favorite drink, sit back, relax, and enjoy this week’s “Caught My Eye!”
Pothole Search:
Although there are six inches of snow on the ground (and most of the roads have not been plowed, again), the Great Falls Tribune is looking for nominations for the mother of all potholes. Read the story HERE.
Here’s a fact: If the city would have cleared the snow from the streets better, there would not be so many potholes (or accidents) on the city streets.
Stimulus Anniversary:
It’s been a couple years since the stimulus was passed. To celebrate the anniversary of something that did not work, the “interns” at the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) put together a little video to mark the anniversary. Montana Senator Jon Tester is one of the stars. You can watch the video HERE.
Travels with Max:
U.S. Senator Max Baucus is well-known for taking junkets around the world. He recently announced that he is heading to Brazil and Columbia next week.
Since the economy is in the gutter and unemployment is so high (not to mention we are in deep debt) I thought it was nice of him to invite some Montanans with him because not many of us can afford to travel much these days – especially to foreign countries.
Just put it on our credit card Max…
Iowa Wrestling:
It was somewhat refreshing to read about the Iowa high school wrestler (Joel Northrup) who decided to forfeit his state wrestling tournament match to a female instead of wrestling her. In a statement, Northrup said:
I have a tremendous amount of respect for Cassy and Megan (Black, the tournament’s other female entrant) and their accomplishments. However, wrestling is a combat sport and it can get violent at times. As a matter of conscience and my faith, I do not believe that it is appropriate for a boy to engage a girl in this manner. It is unfortunate that I have been placed in a situation not seen in most of the high school sports in Iowa.
Often we see young people who just go along with the crowd to be cool, but it was nice to see the young man stand by his beliefs. Read the story HERE.
Poop Delivery:
I guess the mail carrier was tired of stepping in it. Read the story HERE.
Is this a record?
A man was found to have concealed over 30 items. Read this STORY to find out where…
The Political Inbox:
For my new readers, I receive a lot of political e-mails from both Democrats and Republicans from around the country, not to mention the political parties. Just about every week I take a look at some of them and sometimes have a little fun with them.
–Senator Jon Tester sent a campaign e-mail with the subject “Help me keep the heat on” and he was not talking about his farm in Big Sandy. Tester was talking about heating assistance funding instead of funding for new railways and the President’s budget. Of course, he wanted me to send him some money to get his message out.
Tester has to separate himself from President Obama for any chance of reelection. Look for more of these e-mails.
–Congressman Denny Rehberg sent a campaign e-mail with the subject “Help Denny Defund ObamaCare” in which he says he needs me to stand with him (and send him some money).
The Rehberg e-mail was not as professionally done as Tester’s, and ironically Rehberg did not mention that Tester supported ObamaCare.
-The Montana GOP sent me an e-mail with information about the first gubernatorial candidates’ forum that is scheduled and that the Tea Party is having a convention in Helena today and Saturday.
It’s the old “keep your enemies closer” deal with the Montana GOP and the Tea Party…I hope the Tea Party flies the flag properly…
–Libertarian Candidate for Governor Ron Vandevender sent me an e-mail a few days ago. He has his website up and running. You can check it out HERE.
Leave The Trees Alone:
There are a lot of rivalries in college football and some people take it a little too far. The latest case is the Alabama fan who poisoned some 130 year-old oak trees at Auburn University. Here’s the STORY.
Forrest Gump would be ashamed of what the Alabama fan did…
