Boogers, Back-Ups, and Knees

Like most people I watched the NFC and the AFC Championship games on Sunday. I actually picked the winners (the Packers and the Steelers) but missed getting in “the pizza” on Papa John’s football contest because I had the Steelers winning 17-13 and they won 24-19.

A couple of interesting things happened during the games that were commented about on Twitter: Booger-gate and Cutler’s knee.

Cutler’s Knee:

In the NFC game, Bears quarterback Jay Cutler was having a tough day. Finally he was pulled for the second string QB and the second string QB was pulled for the third string QB.

There was very little love for Cutler on Twitter during and after the game. Even some current and former NFL players went after him for what they called “quitting” and those were the nicer things mentioned.

I have had no love for Cutler since he played for the Denver Broncos. He was listed as questionable after being removed from the game. He did not seem to be “in the game” from the camera shots taken of him on the sidelines. He seemed disinterested. Someone joked on Twitter that it looked like he had a “snuggie” on.

Today the team announced that Cutler had suffered a MCL sprain. Players handle injuries differently. I’ve seen some QBs limp around and throw touchdown passes (Philip Rivers in 2008 comes to mind) and I’ve seen them take snaps with a steel rod in their pinky finger (Steve DeBerg).

These are the Chicago Bears, so toughness is defined by players like Dick Butkus, Mike Singletary, and Brian Urlacher. Will the fans circle the wagon around their QB, Jay Cutler? It’s totally up to them, but many other folks have already made their decision.

Boogers and Back-ups:

As the AFC Championship game was getting started a camera caught Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez wiping something that appeared to come from his nose on Jets backup QB Mark Brunell.

Football players have game-day rituals, but even that seems a little gross.

The people at my football party took notice and I asked, “Was he wiping a booger on that fellow’s coat?”

“Gross” and “Yuck” were the cries from those at my house…

Seems thousands of other people thought the same thing as Twitter went wild and there’s a video of the event. Someone tweeted “there goes that sexy man crown.”

Maybe Sanchez will say it’s “snot true.”
