Most of the time Presidential press conferences are pretty boring, but yesterday’s presser was great theater. President Obama opened up – with both barrels. He seemed angry. I watched. I wished I had prepared some popcorn for the 35 minute show.
He looked a little like he had just been “schooled” on the basketball court and all he could do was call the Republicans “hostage takers.”
Jay Leno on the Tonight Show has a clip of Obama’s anger HERE (Fast forward to the 4:30 mark).
Obama does seem “older” these days – like the pressure of the Presidency is weighing him down. That’s OK Mr. President, that office does it to everyone, although you’ve been President for less than two years.
After ironing out a compromise, Obama may not have any friends in Washington (but do you ever). His allies believe he gave too much. The lefties are mad as hell at him.
I was happy to see a compromise (although it’s not a done deal yet). I like tax cuts. I believe keeping those making above $250,000 a year from having their taxes raised is a good thing. Many of those folks are small business owners who are the backbone of getting the economy moving in the right direction. If you increase their taxes, they are less likely to hire people or expand their business and that would harm the fragile economy even more.
Besides, the country was facing a showdown and people were nervous. At least we now know there’s a plan.
When President Bush (and Congress) gave us tax cuts (or rebates) I used it to stimulate the economy! I hired a local small business to do some work on my home. It kept three people employed for one day at my house. When I received the second tax cut, I did the same thing. I told the workers they were working on my house because of the Bush tax cuts. I like to spread the good news and also play a small part in the political game.
This is the holiday season. It would be great if Congress would get this done, get out of town and let Americans have a few days of peace and quiet to celebrate the holidays.
But that would take some peace and goodwill and that’s something we hardly see from Washington these days…
