Montana Politics 2010: Gun lock…trigger lock…

Congressman Denny Rehberg was touring a tool and machine shop in Hamilton, Montana, when a reporter for the Ravalli Republic quoted Rehberg saying:

“If Obama is president, maybe you need to spend more time developing a gun lock, a trigger lock…”

I knew when I first read it the lefties would try to twist it into something else, and they did – like saying Rehberg was joking about shooting the President or that the President’s life was in danger.

Silliness.

Dennis McDonald (Rehberg’s democratic opponent in November) fired off a statement late in the day and it was picked up by NBC Montana. McDonald thinks Rehberg should apologize to President Obama for those remarks. He also tied Rehberg’s comments in with the upcoming anniversary of 9-11.  Rehberg also released a statement to NBC Montana. You can read the story HERE.

It looks like most other media outlets in Montana decided it was just another desperate attempt by the Democrats to smear Rehberg for campaign purposes – and it was.

When I read the Ravalli Republic story, I thought Rehberg was referring to the soaring gun sales since Obama became President and the need for locks for safety – something that a tool and machine business might develop.

We all know that President Obama is not a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. We’ve also read stories about more guns being sold since he became President. These are facts. His two picks for justices of the Supreme Court were not exactly pro-second amendment, either. Obama gets an “F” from the pro-gun groups.

Obama has said in the past that safety of children around guns and keeping guns away from criminals are important to him. Gun locks and trigger locks will help with that cause – maybe a market that a tool and machine shop just might want to look into.
