Toga Time?

As I commented about earlier, it will probably be tough going for the Democrats in the next couple of elections unless things turn around and the streets are paved in gold.

Not even I thought the Democrats could screw up in this short amount of time. I know, I know, it’s all Bush’s fault.

Basically, the voters gave the Democrats the keys to Washington. Some people believe they have run it like the fraternity house portrayed in the movie, Animal House. Animal House historians may remember that John “Bluto” Blutarsky (played by John Belushi) spent seven years in college (GPA of 0.0) and went on to become a United States Senator.

Washington sometimes reminds me of Animal House.

First we have Max Baucus spending campaign money to try and explain the health care bill. Then Vice President Joe Biden was sending an e-mail asking people to help Senators Max Baucus and Jon Tester.

Montana’s junior Senator, Jon Tester, has been sending e-mails with the frequency that some middle school kids send text messages. So far this month, I’ve seen e-mails dealing with everything from health care, to veterans, to taxes hitting my inbox.

In one of those e-mails, which I guess was a try to deflect some coverage of the TEA Party protests across the nation, Senator Tester told me:

It’s tax day and 99 percent of Montanans can breathe a little easier thanks to the tax cuts they’ve received in the past year.

He then threw in some sources from a left-leaning group to make his case. He also told me he was against bailouts and he was the only senate democrat to have voted against both the bailouts of Wall Street and the U.S. auto industry. I guess we see his campaign strategy for 2012 – independence!

It’s not that rosy a picture, senator. In fact, a train wreck is coming and your party is in charge.

First, Tester has been the junior senator from Montana since January 2007 and in January 2007, the total outstanding debt owed by the United States was $8,673,367,073,665.76 ($8.6 Trillion dollars).

That was not good, but there were promises made to stop spending like drunken sailors in Washington by candidates like Jon Tester.

So how did the spending control work you might ask?

Now, just a little over three years later, he has helped balloon that debt to $12,823,492,436,215.11. (12.8 Trillion Dollars) Source: TreasuryDirect.gov (01/10/07 – 04/14/10)

To put it in basic terms, this is about $41,600 owed by every person.

It’s the Jobs, stupid:

Senator Tester was elected in November 2006. That month the unemployment rate was 4.5%. In March 2010 it was 9.7%. Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics. Heck, even gas prices are higher now.

So, are you better off now?

The Democrats have spent more money in a few short years than at anytime in history and now we are mired in even more debt. At the end of this year (2010), every taxpayer will pay more in taxes as they combine tax brackets. If you are married you’ll pay more, if you have a child you’ll pay more, and if you die in 2011 you’ll pay more. We won’t even get into being taxed for healthcare because it looks like states will have to raise taxes to pay for it.

There’s even the possibility of a Value Added Tax (VAT) idea being kicked around.

With work like this, if I was running in 2012 or 2014, I’d start campaigning now, too. Tester has already launched his campaign website (almost three years before his election day) which is probably unprecedented. Of course, it’s been scrubbed of all the issues he stood for in 2006 when he was an outsider and could be for most everything.

Maybe Tester, Baucus and the Democrats should just throw a toga party.
