Well On His Way

According to this STORY, it looks like the United States and Russia have agreed to significantly reduce the number of nuclear weapons.

Once this treaty is signed, the three remaining intercontinental ballistic missile bases will be jockeying to keep from being eliminated.  Two of the three (Malmstrom and F.E. Warren) don’t really have other major missions at their bases, so they will probably be on the chopping block first.

If I understand the agreement correctly, each side will have seven years to comply.  During those seven years it will be survival of the fittest (or the most powerful in the defense world).  So right now it does not look to good for Malmstrom or F.E. Warren – although seven years is a long time and much may change (like a new Administration, congressional representatives who know a thing or two about defense issues, the majority in congress, etc.)

If reports are true, the new agreement will allow between 1,500 and 1,675 warheads and 500 to 1,100 delivery systems, including missiles and bombers.  Currently we are allowed 2,200 warheads and 1,600 launch vehicles.

The three missile bases in Montana, North Dakota, and Wyoming have 450 missiles.  Malmstrom lost 50 missiles in 2007 when Montana lost clout on key defense and military committees in the United States Senate due to the elections of 2006.

I do expect the Obama Administration to go all out on the silly scale and try to do away with all the land-based nuclear weapons and then scale it back some in compromise.  We all know Obama wants a world without nuclear weapons and, with this agreement, he is well on his way.  In my opinion, he’s making America less safe.
