Observations from the week 02/20/10

With Congress on recess it’s always a good week to see what out elected officials are doing and saying.  Some might say that if the current political climate continues, and if our incumbent senators and representatives were animals, they would most definitely be placed on the Endangered Species List.

Recess is when they are supposed to come back to their home state and “reconnect” with their constituents, or take a junket somewhere to do some “research.”

As we’ve seen with Senator Baucus in the past, it might be a good time to get away with your girlfriend on the taxpayer’s dime to do a little R&R&R (Rest, Relaxation and Research).

Baucus:  Pizza and Home

Speaking of Montana’s senior senator, he sent an e-mail saying:

What a great week to be home! Coming back is always so refreshing. Whether it is catching up with old friends, meeting new friends, or just being able to clear my head as I go for a run up Mount Helena, there is nothing better than coming home.

We know that Max really did not have a home here in Montana for several years.

By the way, he also performed one of his frequent stunts (which actually involved doing some work) – this time at a pizza place.  Ho-hum, Max ho-hum.

Tester:  Now Seniority Matters

Our junior Senator, Jon Tester, visited Malmstrom Air Force Base and called the people stationed there “soldiers” instead of Airmen.  This shows how far out of touch and weak he is on military issues.  He’s already lost 50 missiles from Malmstrom on his watch and with a new treaty being debated with Russia; look for more to leave in the following years.

Tester also took the time to send out an e-mail from his campaign account with the subject “Twisting the Truth” which was about an ad being run in Montana that he does not like.  The truth is that under Tester’s tenure in the senate, they have spent more money that ever.

Ironically, Tester twisted the truth and lied to the voters in 2006 to barely get elected, so what goes around comes around, big boy.

Now he tells the Great Falls Tribune editorial board that he is running in 2012 because he’s now 18 from the bottom in the senate.  Big deal.  That’s funny, because he claimed in 2006 that seniority did not matter when he was running against a three-term senator.

These are the lies and fabrications that are turning the voters off in this country.  Too bad the media doesn’t call them out on it more, especially in Montana.

The Montana GOP Winter Kick-Off:

The Montana GOP held a winter kick-off in Great Falls last weekend.  Their national leader, (Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele) did not show up, claiming weather reasons.  So, Representative Michelle Bachman, a far right-winger from Minnesota, phoned in to rally the faithful.  Bachman is one of my least favorite GOPers, although I do like Bachman Turner Overdrive, but I doubt she knows anything about classic rock.  I wonder who decided that Bachman should call the Montana GOP?

I also wonder why Steele did not reach out and touch the Montana GOP by phone, like Bachman did?  Maybe his AT&T or Verizon map did not cover Montana?

That’s a short look at some of the stuff that caught my attention this week in the news and, as you can see, the political world is still just as screwed up as ever!
