Commander-in-Chief?

Barack Obama was supposed to visit a U.S. military hospital in Landstuhl, Germany, after his “We are the world” speech on Thursday in Berlin.

He canceled it. Maybe because the press could not accompany him. His spokesman, retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Scott Gration said in an interview:

Senator Obama had hoped to and had every intention of visiting our troops to express his appreciation and gratitude for their service to our country,” Gration said, but added: Sen. Obama did not want to have a trip to see our wounded warriors perceived as a campaign event.

Get real General – this whole trip is a freaking campaign event – even the part that was paid for with taxpayer money. We’ll see many photos and video from every part of this trip used in Obama flyers, letters, and campaign commercials.

Obama should have visited the troops who have sacrificed so much for our country. This is very poor judgment for someone who desires to be the Commander-in-Chief. To heck with it being perceived as a campaign event. He should tell his campaign staff to take a hike for a few hours, while he personally visits with some real Americans. Obama dropped the ball on this one – big time.

  1. Wulfgar- No, there’s nothing wrong with you – you are just grounded to what really matters: football. The experts at ESPN say the Chiefs had the best draft of all teams. It’s rebuilding time, so I would be happy with 8-8 this year. Johnson may have seen his best years because he had the O-line to block, and the QB situation will need to be addressed if Croyle does not come out strong. Herm Edwards has about two more years or he’ll be gone. Gonzales will again put up some great numbers this year, but it may be for nothing. But who knows, they may be better than expected, but I have some doubts.-Jack

  2. Which is as McCain did.And no, I will not be at Invesco at Mile High. I look vastly more forward to a visit from the Chiefs than I do a Presidential candidate. There must be something wrong with me …(By the way, are the Chiefs just trying to suck? Their draft was woeful, they’ve made no significant free-agent purchase and Gonzales is not the player he used to be. They cannot be betting the farm on Johnson’s legs … can they? What the hell are they thinking?)

  3. Wulfgar – I did follow the link. The CNN story was from April. Bottom line is that Obama could have taken a tour of the hospital, but he decided not to after he was told he could not bring campaign staffers or reporters with him, just official senate staff and secret service. The Pentagon did not cancel his trip there, they just told him the rules that all candidates must follow, and Obama did not want to follow them. By the way, you must be quite happy with the fact that your favorite candidate is speaking at your favorite team’s stadium. I hope you are able to attend. -Jack

  4. Actually, Jack, if you’d have bothered to follow the link, you would have seen that <>Vet Voice<> was also pointing out that the same circumstance happened to McCain in April. And about that … you said nothing.Hmmm, why would that be …You have a great weekend too.

  5. Wulfgar: The part you refer to is the kool-aid from the Obama folks. After being told he could not bring reporters with him, only official senate staff and secret service, Obama canceled. Sad – Obama would only go visit the troops if he could get a photo op, but, I expected that from someone who despises the military. Here’s the info from the Pentagon: Chief Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell confirmed to Politico that Department of Defense officials cautioned Barack Obama’s campaign that his planned visit to wounded American troops in Germany could not be political in nature and that he would be barred from bringing along campaign staff and reporters. He also said that Cindy McCain recently requested to visit sailors aboard the U.S.N.S. Comfort and was denied.“Sen. Obama is welcome to visit Landstuhl or any military hospital in his official capacity as a United States senator,” Morrell said in a brief interview. “But there is a DOD policy which governs campaigning and electioneering at military facilities that would have to be respected if he were to visit. That distinction was relayed and made clear to campaign, and they made a decision on their own based on that guidance.”I’m glad I could clear this up for you, Wulfgar. Have a nice weekend! -Jack

  6. Uhh, Jack, you might want to < HREF="http://www.vetvoice.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=1671" REL="nofollow">check your outrage<> for a few minutes.<>Barack Obama canceled a pre-planned visit to the troops in Germany yesterday after being told by the Pentagon that the trip would violate a Pentagon policy prohibiting campaign stops on military installations. No problem there.<>
