Do-Over

A Farm Bill is needed. But the most recent Farm Bill is a bloated mess and the actions of the democrats who control the agenda in House and Senate to pass this bill are comical to say the least.

The democrats decided that to get almost everyone to support the bill, they would add some sweet pork. It worked. The bill passed with flying colors.

As I commented earlier, Max Baucus made some sweet coin for his work on a land deal here in Montana.

Making some sweet coin for your campaign is easy in Washington. A group comes forward and tells you that want something. They hold a fundraiser for you or the checks come in the mail. You insert language to help your new-found friends in the next bill that comes along to earn that sweet coin. You state over and over in a hypnotic state, “Montana comes first…Montana comes first.” You start believing it. The media does too.

Additionally, if I were a farmer or rancher serving the Senate and House and receiving subsidies, I would recuse myself from votes on that issue because it helps me profit personally. But, then again, that’s just me. So much for bringing Montana values to Washington, Senator Tester.

But the funniest, most idiotic part of the whole Farm Bill issue is Congress passed a bill that did not contain a whole section – the section about trade, nutrition, food aid, etc. It was missing 34 pages. Embarrassing to say the least.

Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House, certified the bill as a true copy and sent it to the President. Montana’s Max Baucus, feeling pretty cocky, said that Bush should not bring a knife to a gunfight and said the President’s proposed veto was just a speed bump in the road.

Open mouth – insert foot, Senator Baucus. That little speed bump caused the Baucus/Pelosi vehicle to run off the road.

Now we have a do-over, like Congress is at recess on an elementary school playground. The bill will pass again with flying colors because everyone can go home and tell their constituents, “Look what I did for you.” This do-over could cut into their vacation time, so the work will be done post-haste.

If they send the bill back to the President with all the sections, I hope he vetoes it again. Imagine -A President with record low approval ratings vetoing a bill from a Congress that has lower (record low) approval ratings.

At least he’s making the members of the House and Senate work for the sweet pork. Maybe he can at least cut into some of their vacation time.
