Today it is reported on CNN.com through the Dow Jones Newswire and in the Wall Street Journal that Max Baucus is returning $12,750 in campaign donations to a defense company after a reporter found out the parent company was facing “scrutiny about setting up shell corporations in offshore tax havens.”
It is ironic that it was only after an inquiry was made by the media that Baucus decided to return the money. The Finance Committee, which Baucus is the Chairman, is looking into tax havens.
After Dow Jones inquired about the fund raiser, Baucus’ campaign said he is returning “every penny” of the funds. “Now that he understands the situation better, he feels that it’s in everyone’s interest to return those dollars,” said Baucus campaign spokesman Barrett Kaiser.
Is this political speak or what – “Now that he understands the situation better…”
In other words, after someone asked about the possibility of this looking a little unethical…
Many of us remember that back in 2001, Max had to return money he raised in Jack Abramoff’s skybox at the MCI Center in Center in downtown Washington, D.C.
Most folks in Montana probably feel Max has enough campaign money to buy this election already, especially this fellow.
