The Same Line in 2008?

It’s finally over for General David Petraeus, Commanding General, Multi-National Force – Iraq, and Ryan Crocker, the U.S. ambassador to Baghdad. They came to Washington to testify before Congress last week.

Imagine if you are the General and the Ambassador and you have to sit and answer silly questions hour after hour in the Senate. Then, you get a few hours sleep and get to do it all over again in the House.

President Bush is backing the recommendations from Petraeus, which is the right thing to do. Many Democrats want to run the war from their cushy offices in Washington, D.C. We can never let that happen.

We all know that the reason we went into Iraq was based on faulty intelligence. It was not just the Republicans fault nor was it just the Democrats fault for not checking into the intelligence better. Now, we’ve seen success in Iraq. Our troops deserve the chance to finish the job they are successfully accomplishing.

But, it looks like the biggest news in the last few months in regards to Iraq has been the surrender of the Democrats. They used the War in Iraq as a way to get votes to win in 2006, and now they have basically conceded defeat.

Will voters fall for the same line in 2008?

In 2006, Democrats told us, “The only way to protect our country is to change the balance of power in Washington.” The balance of power changed, the democrats were placed in charge, and nothing has happened.

Even Ms. Medea Benjamin, cofounder of Code Pink, spoke on Friday about her group’s unhappiness with the Democrats in their attempt to stop the war. On the O’Reilly Factor. Benjamin said the Democrats, “…were voted in to end this war and they haven’t done their job.”

If you were a supporter of any of the Democrats who ran on the ending the war platform, you should be just a little ticked off, like Ms. Benjamin. You devoted all your time to electing a candidate to office because he or she promised to end the war. Day after day in October and November 2006 you are on the phones calling people telling them to vote for your candidate. Your life is totally devoted to the cause. Over a year later, you’re still waiting. You went door to door, you gave money to these candidates until it hurt. Now, you’ve got nothing to show for it. Will you support these candidates in 2008?

Jon Tester said recently, “It’s going to take the election for the policy to change.” He wanted to cut and run in 2006. He was elected to end the war. He failed. Recently, he urged Montanans to vote for Jim Hunt to help end the war in Iraq, so it appears the Democrats will use the same line in 2008, they used in 2006.

The Democrats have the majority in the House and Senate. They hold the funding keys to this war. If they really wanted to stop the war, they could not fund it. It’s that simple. The new spin from the left is to say we need more troops in Afghanistan. Maybe we really do need more troops in Afghanistan, but that’s up to the Generals, not the Democrats. It’s also not a reason to leave Iraq.

Bush has threatened them with vetoes if they even place a restriction on future funding. Look for no restrictions on the funding for the war. The Democrats were not ready to lead.

After over a year of this back and forth, it still appears to me that many senators and representatives, especially those on the left, have contempt for our military. That’s too bad. We need to unite and win this war so our troops can come home.

  1. Contempt for our military!?? They really have contempt for all of us. They like to play the game that they are doing the “people’s business” but it’s all just for show and personal aggrandizement. Oh, and scoring meaningless points against Republicans.
