The answer is because North Dakota has a U.S. Senator who holds a powerful position on the Defense Appropriations Committee.
The Air Force has decided to add a squadron of B-52 aircraft at Minot AFB, North Dakota, and about 1100 more personnel. It will add around another $75 million in economic impact to the Minot area.
North Dakota’s U.S. Senator, Byron Dorgan is on the Senate Appropriations Committee, with a key seat on the Defense Appropriations subcommittee. He was the catalyst in adding the planes.
Interestingly, the Air Force wanted to start reducing the number of B-52s a few years ago, just as they did the missiles at Malmstrom AFB. Dorgan asked for justification and it was determined the Air Force needed the B-52s. B-52s have been around forever, and they have adapted over the years to different missions.
Minot is increasing its mission, while Malmstrom started cutting theirs in 2007. Minot AFB is also home to 91st Space Wing and its 150 Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles.
Things are looking brighter in North Dakota these days thanks mostly to Dorgan.
